In two different discussions here in the Allison section folks mention the amount of oil used to change the filter - - with wildly different amounts (1 qt. vs. 2 gal.)
Anyone know for sure what is correct in a 3000 series?

There are two filters, a main and a lube filter. If changing the main you will lose all your tranSynd. If just changing the one that is required for the 5,000 filter change then you will lose about two quarts. When I replaced mine quite a while ago, now have 30,000 I bought a gallon of TranSynd and gave it to my service center and they used about half of the gallon to top it off after the filter change.

Just had my main and lube filters replaced. It took 4 quarts of fluid to refill the transmission. I had original estimates from 2 qts - 2 gals.

5K mile change requirement??? I was recently at my Allison shop having them verify shift points. They didn't say anything about service intervals that short. In fact, I think they said something like 20K-30K if you used TranSynd.

This is what I find funny about forums. A person asks a question about fluid loss and they get the gambit of answers of what the poster thinks is useful. Just here we get either a couple of quarts to all the fluid in the transmission. I don't think both can be correct? I relize the purpose here is to help. So has this helped the person who posted the question or left them more confused? Just a thought.

This is information is copied from Allison's brochure so it should be accurate.

I can verify it is accurate for the 1000 series transmission since I changed the filter myself after the first 5000 miles as Allison recommends.

"Fluid Loss with Filter Change Only
When performing initial Main Filter change or
changing Main and Lube Filters at recommended
intervals, approximate fluid loss for each filter is
as follows:
• 1000 and 2000 Product Families Transmissions
Control Main Filter = 1 pint (0.47 liters)
• 3000 and 4000 Product Families Transmissions
Main Filter = 2 quarts (1.9 liters)
Lube Filter = 8 quarts (7.6 liters)"

Thanks for all the info..... Keeping in mind that Monaco gave me (thru previous owner) every book under the sun except for an Allison I have decided to change the oil (and filter(s) due to the 48 or 60 month time limit. Also I know nothing of the prior maintenance so better safe than sorry.
The "refill" amount appears to be approx. 19 qts. but the question now is: does one change one or two filters? If all the above info is reread, it seems that some did one filter and others did two???? The Allison info I've found does not speak to what is contained in the "oil filter kit" so what is it, 1 or 2?

If you are changing 19 qts then change both filters. They are side by side accessible from the bottom of the trans. They are also labeled as "main" and "lube". I have no idea what filters are in the "oil filter kit". You will need both filters an "o" ring for each and a gasket for each. Take a look at www.rvchassisparts.com they usually have a good price.

H. Miller, Hers's a link to a step-by-step filter change for an Allison 3000MH transmission.

This is what I followed and it was within 1 quart accurate.

REAL INFORMATION:
The "filter kit" contains 1 smaller o-ring for the drain plug. 3 sets of o-rings for the filter housing (one set will be thrown away depending on age of your housing), 2 filters, 2 "paper" gaskets and instructions.
We purchased the 15 gal. galvanized "wash tub" from Lowes @ $15.00 and 5 gallons of TranSynd. We now need another gallon of TS as EXACTLY 5.5 gallons (22 quarts) was drained. So much for the 19 quarts mentioned in the literature!
It took approx. 3 hours but I'm a piddler and it was the first time. Also the 12 long bolts that held the filter holders in place had a red rubbery substance on the threads (not lock-tite which drys hard) I had some!!! It was a hi-temp gasket maker that "someone" was using as a sealer and thread locking material for the bolts. None is/was used on the mateing surfaces.
The new filters had a mfg. date of 12/09 while the old ones were 3/04.
Material cost will be $250. however the the most competitive price I found to have it done was $480. and it's done right!
