What Transmission Do I Have

Just took possession of a 2002 Terra with an 8.L Vortec. I want to service the transmission (fluid and filter change out) but am not sure if I have an Allison Transmission. I've got the original invoice but the transmission type is not listed. I've searched the VIN number and there appears to be no code that indicates if the transmission is an Allison. Sooooo, how do I determine if the transmission is an Allison and what model? Thanks.

Climb underneath and find the manufacturer/serial # plate if nothing else works.

If no one can help, call the GM customer service line at: 800-222-1020 and ask them.

Can you find out if it's a W-series chassis, if so try going to the Workhorse Chassis forum and ask. Ed Gray should know the answer if he sees the post. You could probably take a photo someone will recognize it. If so you may see an Allison oil filter on it.

Fleetwood built the coach, call them and give them the VIN, they can tell you what the trans is. Then get the serial number off the trans and call the manufacturer.

Go underneath and look for two spin on oil filters.

The Allison 1000 transmission has a spin on oil filter, usually orange and it's fairly small compared to the engine oil filter.

If you only have one spin on oil filter it's not an Allison 1000 transmission.

Get back to us and we'll tell you how to service your Allison 1000 if it is that model.

Fredk20716-

There's a thread from 2015 about this topic. Read the whole thread, but here's a place to start (in the middle).

2002, Workhorse built the chassis, not GM. As mentioned, look for small spin on filter, driver's side. Also you can look underneath and see if there is a trans pan drain plug. The Allison trans will have a drain plug. A GM 4L80E will not.

OK, crawled under the unit and took these photos. Don't see an exterior filter or Allison on the pan. So can someone ID this as an Allison? Thanks!

Looks like a 4L80E GM trans.

I thought the same thing. A picture of the left (driver's) side of the transmission body and I can tell you for sure if it is.

After some back and forth with Fleetwood and Workhorse confirmed it is an 4L80E. By the way the pics are from the drivers side. Thanks all.
