Can I use Dexron IV in the 1000 allision transmission.
I see Mobil has delvac TES 295 Synthetic ATF developed for this transmission, are either of the above better than the dexron III recommended in the book?
Thanks DH

Hi DH,
Dexron VI is compatible with the earlier Dexron III but Dexron III isn't backward compatible with IV or V. Going with synthetics is a personal choice, I'm a firm believer in using what the manufacturer recommended in the OE and changing at the recommended intervals.
But, there are many members who prefer synthetics.... it's your choice.

if your allison warranty has not expired, you may get an extension by changing to allison trandyd.
my warranty had expired time wise so i installed amsoil tes295 synthetic fluid primarily because of the amsoil guarantee.
any synthetic tes295 fluid is better than dexron in the allison.

Allison 1000's that were "ORIGINALLY" filled with Dex III can use any TranSyd approved oil or Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

DH: I want to warn you that DEXRON VI, which is packaged as a direct replacement for Dexron III, is NOT TO BE USED IN YOUR ALLISON. There is an Allison "WATCH" bulletin that lists the Allison serial numbers AFTER which the DEX 6 can be used, but I don't have it easily available right now. Suffice it to say that if your Allison came from WCC loaded with DEX III, then you should not use DEX VI. If it originally came with TranSynd, then you want to stay with that (or other approved synthetic), but please avoid DEX VI as it WILL cause damage in an Allison.
Unless you can find some "old stock" true Dexron III, which is unlikely, you will need to use one of the fluids meeting TES 295. The newer formulation, Dexron VI, is acceptable in GM trannys which originally used Dex III, but this IS NOT TRUE FOR ALLISON TRANNYS. ED

Synthetic fluids seem to run cooler, Transynd and the TES-295 approved fluids also benefit from extended change intervals.
http://www.allisontransmission.com/s...hangeinterval/
Allison's direct replacement for Dexron III is TES 389, (non-syn)
The only Dexron fluid I've seen a caution on is Dexron VI. Allison had a Service Bulletin that Dexron VI was not compatible with the seals and o-rings in older 1000/2000 series tranny's. About 2007, Allison transmissions after a specific serial number were compatible.

Food for thought: Dexron was developed for automotive transmissions. Cars and light trucks have very high power to weight rations as compared to the commercial vehicles an Allison is normally used in. So, an automotive transmission in a high power to weight vehicle doesn't really "work". A large truck, and to a fair extent a motorhome, needs the transmission to work to transfer the power to the ground. The transmissions' lifeblood is its fluid.
Dexron is okay if it is changed on time and kept within its proper temperature limits. The better the fluid, the better the protection it gives to the transmission. Synthetics have fantastic sheer strength as compared to a mineral based fluid, as well as better resistance to oxidation. TES-295 fluids are what Allison has come up with after much painful field experience with fluids. If you look at their fluid change recommendations, it's pretty obvious the difference in useful fluid life they are willing to bet on.
Just somethin to chew on.
