Wix makes a replacement filter for the Allison 1000. Wix has seemed to have a good reputation, any comments good or bad on this filter?

Wix, Purolator and Napa Gold are all the same filters made by the same company and all three have great reputations. All the filters on my cars and MH are Wix filters. I have not changed the tranny filters yet. There are some brand filters out there that I would never use but Wix is not one of the them.

the allison 1000 tranny filter has a washer like magnet on top of it. when you change the filter after checking the magnet for metal, you put the magnet on the new filter.
other brand filters may not have the necessary recess for the magnet or the magnet may block the oil holes.
oemy on this forum has the allison filter for a good price. check his website.

I have tried a Wix filter... but I went back to Allison and that is what I use.

I came across this very interesting study of oil filters and its summary. It answers a lot of questions we have about filters and provides us with the questions we should ask to determine if we are buying a good quality filter. There are shortcomming to the study and they are readily acknowledged by the writer but a very informative read.

Although this is good info I would not bet the farm on it as both of those reports were last updated in 1999.... That makes the data 10 years old and I would suspect that a lot has changed in 10 years.

FWIW, the last time I bought filters for my MH3000, a mechanic at the Allison shop said "Don't use Wix filters", and also named several other brands that he thought were ok. He claimed to have rebuilt at least 3 units that had used Wix. He said that they all had evidence of reduced oil flow.

Recently, I changed the spin on control filter on my Allison 1000 transmission. I used a NAPA filter and when I installed it, the filter just didn't seem to fit just right, or tighten correctly. So, I purchased an Allison filter like I should have in the first place.
