2.8 Duramax opinions

I'm looking at Colorado/Canyon as a DD and Toad. I'm leaning towards the diesel but I thought I'd check here and see if there were any opinions on the 2.8 Duramax. I'm also wondering about the DEF and any issues, how much of a hassle is it etc.

I driven the diesel and the V6, both seem to be very adequate for my use.

Just doing a little research.

Thanks, Terry

I have the 2.8 and, so far, it’s been great. DEF isn’t a hassle at all. I usually have some left in my jugs for the motorhome and keep the level up that way. I drove it to LA when it was new and got 30 mpg doing 75 most of the way. My in town mileage is around 21 or so. As I mentioned in the other post, the steps for getting it ready to tow are a little different than the gas. Not a big deal, there’s just some wait times for the diesel that I didn’t see in the gas instructions. Also, the Roadmaster in cab battery disconnect isn’t recommended for the diesel. I use a simple knife blade for the job. I’m very happy with it for a tow vehicle and a daily driver.

I tested both and purchased the V6 gas. I wasn't impressed with the diesels power, and more NVH than I expected in a current design.

Have a 2017 Canyon and love it. If I were to buy another new pickup and wanted a smaller one, the Canyon would be at the top of the list. I have owned Ford, Dodge and GMC diesels ( all full size ) and the 2.8 is perfect. IMHO

Love my '17 2.8

I use it for towing quite a lot, and I have to say the engine brake, the quietness while towing, and torque are what sold me. It's not as fast off the line as the v6, but I feel way more in control towing a 7k trailer with the engine doing the lions share of the braking.

Love my 16 Canyon Mini Max..... Took delivery in March of '16

Only 21k in the 3 years. Avg mpg 24.5 with 30.4 avg speed over the life of the truck

My best over 450 miles is 27.6.

I do have over size tires which throws off my odometer by a few %

Only issues have been 2 emissions sensors... not an umcommon issue but did not effect any usage

Towing power is good, just what you'd expect from a small diesel and I get about 16 mpg while towing

DEF...not an issue.... uses very little

As noted in the other replies, it's no rocket!

I use it as my toad and a tow vehicle to tow about a 5k boat..

Check out https://www.coloradofans.com for a ton of info, both good and bad
