I'm considering trading my gmc sierra 1500 for this truck below due to not quite being able to pull my camper. Anyone know of issues with this or reasons to stay away? It does have 187,000 miles

Now Iknow the GM trans are pretty good but still look into the weakness of the tranny... Remember your putting a lot of weight on the tailend of that truck to drag from a dead stop... I found a few articles on a few 1 million mile Dmax's...
Other that that its a nice truck and the mileage is OK. (Not knowing much about GM's lifespan).

I'm by no means an expert on the Duramaxes, but isn't the 2002 in the vintage that GM had injector problems with and offered an extended warranty to cover the injectors? If this warranty has expired and the injectors are still suspect, I'd certainly be aware of the financial exposure of an injector replacement that could be hanging out with this truck.
As I said, I'm not a Duramax expert, so one of the GM owners of this vintage of truck will hopefully come along and shed more light on this subject.

Looks pricey to me. Dealer that has my 2005 3500 extended cab dually, duramax/allison would probably let it go for 25K and it has less than 70k on the odometer. Excellent mechanically and body wise with Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor M+S tires.

I would be afraid of it. To change out the injectors can run over $4500. With 187 k miles I be worried about the whole drive train. It also seems a little pricey.

Just like the Common Rail Dodge's they are extremely expensive...
Now old school 24V Cummins are getting cheaper and cheaper for injectors...
Sometimes newer isn't better...

The injectors are a large consideration. My 02 Duramax injectors went bad, well, 4 of them, in early November 2010. The final bill was $4,570; breakdown- new OEM injectors $350ea, labor was remaining charges. GM paid nothing because my truck was first purchased in November 01, which put it outside the 7 yr/200,000 mile extended warranty. My suggestion is to wait until you find a 2004.5 or newer model. They do not have this injector issue and if they do ever need to be changed it is much less labor because the valve covers do not require removal to access the injectors.

How do you know when a injector goes bad or should be replaced?

It varies, some will make oil - that is the crankcase will fill with diesel oil. Others will smoke and the engine will run rough. There are specific tests that can be run on them to determine the state of the injector - balance rates is one test. Injectors for modern diesels are expensive, about $400.00 each, and they are difficult to get to. Labor is a major part of the expense. GM recommends replacing all eight injectors even if only one fails because the labor for one is almost the same as it is for eight. You don't want to replace an injector this week and then have to do another one next month. Injector issues virtually vanished in the 2nd. generation LLY engines, but the LB7, 1st. generation, were problematic. Some trucks had no problems and others had multiple issues.

unit is right. When the shop took my truck, the service writer said they had one truck come in that was blowing fuel out of the oil fill tube it was so full. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, my oil pressure is about 5# less than before the injectors failed. Price a new replacement engine, but be sitting or you may incur medical bills. Last I heard one is near $11,000.
