New tow ratings on next years 2011 Duramax in a 3500 are up to 20,000 pounds, up from their previous 16,500.

Do you think that the demise of the Kodiak/Top Kick 4500 and 5500 trucks might be responsible for that? GM probably didn't want to abdicate the market to the Ford F-450 and F-550 and the Dodge 4500 and 5500, so perhaps they had to uprate the 3500s to fill the bottom end of that gap.

It could be Rusty, GM has been the underdog on tow ratings for a while now. Maybe they're starting to wake up.... the addition of the factory exhaust brake is an encouraging sign too.

If I loaded my trailer up to its maximum GVWR it'd be approaching that 20K rating (or it's equivalent for my cab configuration, passengers, and cargo). My trailer's GVWR is 18,700 and I roll down the road at about 16,500 to 17,000 depending on holding tank levels and fresh water carried.

It is a lot of weight; GM's brakes are the weakest link. Thank the Lord for hydraulic disc trailer brakes on 3 axles.

The web site you linked states the brakes are "bigger and better".

i would imagine the 20k tow limit is going to be for a single cab dually
no room for momma just the rig out back

our last 350 cc dually was rated at 18100 for the tow after i subtracted my fat rear and the junk in the truck

I agree, and it's probably for a 2 wheel drive, 150# driver, no passengers and no cargo too.

Looking over the link I was trying to see what the 2500 HD diesel would tow? Sometime in my future I'm looking at a 12-12.5k 5er.

At this link they refer to 16,000# as the base tow rating.

Thanx Richard,, Just what I was looking for. 16K that is mightly impressive.....One ?. The latest Dodge Ram diesels (10') don't need the extra diesel exhaust fluid. I hear the "Govt." is mandating new diesel pollution standards where most of the diesels will have some sort of DEF tank to fill every so many miles. How come the Dodge Cummins diesels don't need the extra fluid? This is kind of new to me so be gentle...I'm a slow learner...

In the configuration as used in the Dodge Ram HD pickups, the Cummins 6.7L has been 2010 emissions compliant since its introduction. They are using urea (DEF) in the chassis cab applications for 2010.

I think I read somewhere that the 2011 Duramax does not use urea fluid either. BTW, rockintom posted this exact same information on the excel board. I gotta quit reading about this new 2011 GM duramax or it will lead to buying one.
