Also the def has a shelve life. Buy it when you need it. Just plan appropriately. There was quite the discussion either here or the Excel forum about def that an engineer that works with the stuff wrote up some good info concerning def.

I thought it was all BLUE DEF? Any who I bought a bunch at Napa for $4.00 a gallon. Just have to keep an eye on the date code. Now my '11 2500 say's the warning will come on at 1K. That's BS. It came on my way to CO. and said 727 miles. Came on again and said 225 miles. CO trip was in 2013 225 mile trip was in July 2014 coming back from Truckee CA. DEF works. Sensors/warnings don't. I think as Duramax owners who's trucks require DEF fluid should pitch a bitch that there should be an up date from GM for those vehicles that do not come with something that tells us how much DEF we have.

DO NOT add DEF to your fuel tank! Yes something will happen if you do. DEF is 70% water and WILL cause fuel filter, possible injector problems.

No, you DON'T add it to the diesel fuel. Doing so would be disastrous.
You add it to the DEF tank, not the fuel tank.

While in Canada I went into a NAPA store to get some Blue Def and the counter lady warned me not to put it in the fuel tank. I told her my fill neck was under the hood and asked her why she was warning me. She replied that the week before a Ford owner added it to his fuel tank because both fill necks were inside the fuel door and that he had only made it a block before his engine quit. He had to buy a new engine.....not a cheap mistake....

You must own a Duramax. One of the reasons i bought a Ram and got rid of my Duramax is because the DEF fill on the Ram is next to the fuel fill.If one cant tell a blue cap from a green one they should be looking at the Prius

I am getting ready to buy a new Ram 2500, thank you for posting about the DEF. Approx, how often you need to add. I do not trust idiot lights any way.How much DEF does your truck hold?
Thank you.

The tank will hold about 5 Gal.The Ram you buy will have a DEF gauge under the tach. It depends on driving or towing as to how much you will use. Towing will us it up faster. My 2015 2500 used 2 gallons in about 1300 miles with about 700 of that towing.

You answered your own question (red text)..
As others have stated, DEF is not a fuel additive. Diesels that require it have a special tank for storing it, in RV's usually located near the exhaust on the Passenger side. It reduces harmful emissions, and your nose can detect that it's working pretty well by the significant reduction in noxious odors coming out of the tailpipe.

DEF will not last forever. As long as the ISO #22241 it is ok to use in any vehicle required to use DEF. Contact the manufacture 1st and ask about the date info. Most truck stops will have fresh DEF. Average cost (on sale) per gal. at the local parts store is $5.00

I was thinking it was because of CARB (Calif Air resources Board) I guess I won't blame it on Moonbeam.
I read a very interesting article about DEF in LandLine Magazine. If you listen to XM Radio Roaddog Channel they had quite the conversation about it.

Is there a cap, on both the DEF Tank and the Diesel Tank. I read an article in Hard Working Trucks
That posted pictures of the Ram Trucks not having a cap on either tank.

The fuel inlet has a green plug in it. Cap would have been better. The DEF has a blue cap you must twist to get it loose it has a lanyard on it so it stays close by.
