Leaking oil pan seal.
Yesterday I had my 2016 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 Z71 Diesel in for its second service. It seems that the service tech found a very small leak in the oil pan seal. Currently it's covered under warranty, but as Mom and I are on the road for the next couple months, repair is not possible. The service writer said that it would take 3days to fix because the trans needs to be dropped. Does it really need 3days to drop and install the trans? I would think, at best one long day?

Yikes! hard to imagine. Integral rear shaft seal?
Regardless of what we think and what a dealership needs to schedule a repair you may want to check at another service department on your route. Second opinion so to speak. Keep an eye on level etc.
I've heard that for some engine repairs on these new trucks they pull / raise the whole cab off the frame. Sigh.
Toyota tech was telling me too, that the majority of new gas vehicles anymore have plastic oil pans, and intake manifolds. Go figure.

Thanks for the luck. Suspect I will need to change oil before getting home. Will have it checked.

A good shop should be able to do this in a day if they have the right equipment and the seal in stock.
One of my friend has a small garage. He changed out my SIL engine for a rebuild Jasper engine (which required swapping everything from old to new) and rebuilt her transmission in 3 days.
He also pulled the transmission out of my Class C and changed a seal in it in a day. He doesn't have a large lift that could accommodate the Class C so they man handled it. BTW, his dad bought my Class C in 2009 and is still using now so I figure he did a good job.

I don't think the tranny needs to be dropped just for the oil pan. A leaky rear crankshaft seal is a different story.
A couple of months ago, I saw some oil on my pan. I cleaned it off and just went around and snugged up the bolts. The leak is gone.

My 2011 leaked. The pan is 2 piece and its not an easy fix. They did pull the trans and transfercase to do mine. Its common.

i have a 2003 it is a big job you have to drop the trans and loosen the engine mounts it took 3 days to have mine done it was not under warranty 375.

Mine was leaking at the second oil pan seal....didn't know they had two. Did it in one day. I was surprised and asked the service manager if they had to remove the transmission. He said "no" there are a bunch of tricks, whatever that means. No more leaks. It was warrantied.

My friend just had this done. It was the the seals that needed replaced on his 2015 2500

2013-- 3500 60,000 Mine was leaking at the second oil pan seal. Currently it's covered under warranty

Hi , My 13 with 45K is leaking as well and I have an appointment next week to get it repaired. Do you have an extended warranty? or is this covered under the powertrain warranty?
