I'm considering the purchase of a 2010 F350 with the 6.4 diesel. Having been a Chevy driver...I have no experience with the Ford diesels. Are there any 6.4 drivers out there?

Since Ford dropped the 7.3L and went to the GREAT 6.0L, I have not followed their engines much. Drop by www.thedieselstop.com to get a read on the 6.4L. The site is all Ford diesels and there are some real gear-heads over there.

The 6.4 is a dependable engine, but it will use fuel FAR BEYOND YOUR EXPECTATIONS. I know someone that just traded--MPG was 5.5 pulling a 35 ft. 5th wheel. I would spend the extra money for the 2011.

Being that you're a Chevy driver, I'd be curious to know why you're leaning toward a Ford PowerStroke rather than a Chevy (or GMC) with a Duramax/Allison.

I had a 6.4 in an 09 F-350. Good engine.. lots of power, no smoke, very very quiet - almost sounds like a gasoline engine idling. The Power band is amazing - the sequential turbocharger setup gives you instant power right off of idle all the way to about 3000 rpm - honestly feels like you're driving with a 500 cu in gasoline engine by being almost completely lag free. The 5R transmission is practically bulletproof and their strongest to date in these pickups.

Maintenance is going to be it's downfall. You have to pull the cab from the chassis to do the most basic, simply repairs such as injector maintenance/RR, turbo issues, even to do under valve cover wiring harnesses (which will go bad eventually). Open the hood and count the 7 radiators right up front.. yup.. 7.

That being said.... the 6.4 platform is far superior to the disaster that was the 6.0. There have been very few issues (TSB's) as compared to the 6.0L diesel used from late 2003 to late 2007. The 6.0L problems are one of the factors that made Ford and International part company. I still wish Ford/International would have just continued development of the 7.3 (DT-444) which is by far the best Diesel they've ever used.

My lease was up and I decided to turn my truck back in due to the difficulty in maintaining the truck myself - and cab-offs at the dealership (minimum) cost is $500.00 just to get started. If I were you I'd look into the 2011's with the new Ford designed and built 6.7 L engine. Ford designed the cab/chassis so cab-offs aren't required for the majority of repairs you may need to perform down the road.

Should you decide to go ahead with the 6.4L OR a 2011+ 6.7L get ahold of my buddy Matt at Spartan Diesel Technologies and they can make you a tuner to increase your fuel mileage to over 19mpg. My 09 truck went from 11mpg to just under 21mpg (with even more power) with one of their tuners which leave no footprint on the computer. These guys are ex-Ford and International engineers

I keep hearing of all the 6.0L horror stories but am on my second one, use it commercially for towing and have not had any issues. No egr cooler problems, no blown head gaskets. Maybe it's in the maintenance? Or are all the ones that are coming apart due to guys rodding them around with programmers?

My friend has an 09 6.4 and is also getting great fuel mileage with a Banks tuner and exhaust. And the power is unreal. It went form 11 to 19.5 mpg with the Banks.

I have an '06 with 50,000 on it and the only thing was a heater core blew (possibly from bouncing on rotten California roads). A tow truck guy in New Mexico said they had 4 F350s just like mine configured as wreckers but just had to replace an engine in one. I cringed and he said, "Of course, it had 650,000 miles on it.

I'd love to put a chip in mine and get incredible power and economy (wait-can you have both?) but I'm afraid I'll burn up the drive train after spending thousands of dollars to set it up.

Thanks for all the replies, sorry I haven't posted on here for awhile....but have ordered a 2011 F350 with the 6.7 several weeks ago. One of the problems with looking for the 2010 with the equipment I wanted was the cost...most with the Tow Boss package came so heavy with options that the price difference to a 2011 was narrowed even with the rebates. So decided to go with the 2011 and order the truck with the options I wanted/needed.

You will be happy with the 6.7. I have a 09 250 with a 6.4 and wish i would have kept my 07 6.0. I had to take mine in for some warranty work and they gave me a 11 350 with a 6.7 and the lieameter averaged right at 23 mpg for the week i had it, it was a 350 lariet 4x4 crewcab. Ive been tempted to trade the 09 in.

I have also ordered a 6.7 to replace my trusted V10. Mfg. date of Oct. 18th. Delivery in early November. I hope that my great V10 sells before the new truck arrives. A great tow vehicle, but my wife said NOW or NEVER for the new truck!!!!
