6.0 hp oil pump failure?? HELP

On 2004 power stroke 6.0, is the failure of the high pressure oil pump a common problem? Today it was hard to start but the fired. Got it home and next try to start it would not start. Towed to shop and they said no oil getting to injectors. They seem a little confused as to why no oil. Looking at sites selling 6.0 hp pump, I find companys selling after market billet pumps that they say are better. Are they better. ????? any help greatly appreciated. PS don't be confused by my profile. I do drive a Dodge. I am asking question for a friend.

2004 is a tricky year, you could have a 2003 or a 2004 engine in it. My initial thought is get your truck to another mechanic. If they are confused about why there isn't any oil to the injectors then you need to find someone who will be able to diagnose the issue right the first time. While I love my 6.0, I am completely aware of how grossly expensive this engine can be to fix. More specifically to your issue:

How are they determining that there is no oil getting to the injectors? Has a base oil pressure check been performed to insure oil is getting to the top of the engine (remove oil filter, press down on the relief valve and crank engine - does the bowl fill?) What is the High pressure oil pressure exactly?

There are common problems which involve the HP system which can be repaired permanently with updated parts, but it is very important to know exactly which year engine you have (is the EGR cooler round or square?) to know which problems are applicable to you.

The foremost place to get Ford diesel info is www.thedieselstop.com. They have a section for the 6.0L.

there is a recall/tsb out to repair the quick disconnect on the pump...it will leak enough to cause hard or no starts

go by your ford place a have them pull the tsb

STC fitting is common failure on the 05's, I'm pretty sure that the 04's won't have that issue, namely because they don't have an STC fitting.

Wow, just re-read my reply and I apologize for how that came out, I meant to say that the STC (Snap To Connect) fitting mentioned above wasn't implemented until the 05 engine year, but yes that is a common issue in 05 and many 06's

If it hasn't been all zipped up, a couple of common "mods" are to replace the HPOP screen with a stainless version and if your oil cooler has never been replaced AND you don't know the condition of it, replace it. The core is only about $225 but the labor to get to it is mostly completed already. Finally, turbo drain tube and supply tubes (oil) will all help with longevity.

First go buy a scan guage II, 150 dollars, then you will be able to measure EOT and ECT, if there is a 15 or more degree delta, then you need to replace the oil cooler and do the egr cooler while your there. If the temps are within the 15 degree spec, just use the gauge to keep an eye on them. Or replace the oil cooler with a bullet proof diesel air cooled oil cooler and never have another oil cooler failure! thats what i did!
in 05 the STC fittings were upgraded to a thread on type fitting, they also upgraded the standpipes and dummy plugs, and turbo oil feed and turbo oil drain tube.
go to the Bulletproofdiesel.com website, plenty to read there, and you can order parts online, and give them a call, they have excellent customer service!

All zipped up and repaired. Truck belonged to a friend. He has had every problem discussed on the 2004 6.0 stickys at Dieselgarage.com while OUT of warranty. I think he is looking for a new truck before it breaks again. Thanks for all the good info.
