Fuel/Air Separator placement

Just took delivery on a new 12 F350 Dually Supercab. I had asked my dealer to install an Airdog Fuel Air Separator but there is no room in front of the tank. Airdog suggested outside the bed rail but we felt that left the filters vunerable to damage from impact debris kick up by tire and the emergency brake cable. Any thoughts on this or has anybody found a system that does work in the limited space?

If you were to locate it alongside the frame rails, there should be no problem with debris hitting it. Lots of people put air compressors/tanks in that area, and I had bypass oil filters on my '04 350 for over 100k miles and nothing ever hit them. If it really would concern you, build a deflector in front of it.
