OK Ford PSD owners.....how are yours holding up?

Mine's an '02 7.3L which I purchased in '07. Aside from a few quirky things going wrong (starter adapter plate, glow plug control module), she's been a great tow vehicle.

119K on the clock so far with 40K of that being mine.

I consider a 2002 PSD to be a "second generation" engine. However, since both generations of engine still used the 7.3 block, I would think some of my problem list for my (first generation) 1996 PSD might apply to your 2002 truck.

When I traded in my 1996 PSD last July for the 2009 GMC, it had 133K on the clock. In the 13 years I owned it (purchased new) here's a list of the engine (and engine related) repairs that were made (as best as I can remember):
  • Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS) - two times
  • Both Batteries - two times
  • Serpentine Fan Belt - four or five times (I lost Count)
  • Heater Inside the Fuel Filter Canister
  • Air Conditioning Clutch Bearing
  • Glow Plug Relay - two times
  • Starter
  • Engine Block Heater Plug - Re-Engineered with a Real recepticle (I'm going to have to make this same change to my 2009 GMC Duramax)
  • The Positive Battery Cable that runs between the two batteries and the starter
I know there was some unknown number of non-functioning glow plugs (all original) when I traded it in as it was extremely difficult to start in winter unless I used the block heater.
Overall, I thought my PSD was a very reliable engine, although, I don't have the same "wam & fuzzy" for either of the 6.0 and 6.4 engines which prompted my choice for the Duramax.

I guess I need to knock on wood. The only problem I have had with my 2002 was the CPS at 70,000 miles and the alternator at 80,000 miles.

I did have to replace the radiator overflow bottle due to a crack. Other than that it runs.

Prior to the 2002 I had a 1997 and had the CPS problem and an alternator problem with it....otherwise no problems.

The big problem with the trucks has been the lower ball joints.

If you are throwing serpentine belts, change out the idler pulley. It is probably off by just enough to put side strain on the belt. Check the other pulleys also. In Frank's example the air cond. pulley might have been the problem or at least contributory. My Ford F150 ate belts till I R&Rd the idler.

Unlike Frank I have had few, if any problems with my 1996 F-250 PSD. Something like 104 thousand and it runs great. Replaced fuel filters a couple of times but that is about all. The glow plugs don't seem to work like they used to, but that is about the extent of my problems. Best truck I have ever owned by far. We used it for years traveling, then as a daily commuter, now retired to the farm and used only on special occasions.

I have a 06 F-350 DRW and love it! I am a member of several powerstroke forums and knew about some of the problems with the 6.0 engine. I went ahead and put in the ARP headstuds to help with the gasket issue. The torque to yield stock head bolts are weak and prone to stretching which will cause blown head gaskets. My next project is to get rid of the egr. I hope to have this truck for along time.

40k so far.

Batman, your engine is more typical of what I see and hear from the 6.0L engines.

108,000 on my PSD and still loving it.
so far: cam position sensor, radiator overflow bottle, turbo high pressure o-rings, and 2 water pumps (both replaced by Ford). Normal maintainance - belt, hoses, oil & filters.

I have done the in tank mod, high pressure cross over between heads, 4" exhaust and 4" ATS turbo intake housing and Banks trans command. also run a by-pass oil filter to remove more particles from the oil.

My rear slider window motor went south. The engine in my 2005 F-250 Lariat has 80K on it and still runs like a raped ape.

The 6.0 in the 2004 E-350 we use in our business needed a new cam sensor, a new crank sensor, two new batteries, and a rebuilt battery cable. It was a fleet vehicle in the rust belt before we rescued it and brought it home to Florida with 122K on the clock.

Don't chip or tune the 6.0 engine and it runs fine. Try and make a hot rod out of it and you are asking for trouble.

we have one of the problem 6L psd's in our 2004. Just turned 88,000 miles, have had egr and oil coolerx2,icp sensor, fuel sensor, and it seems all the other sensors to boot. rough idling and surging, hopefully thats over and done with, Ford worked on it again in Sept, has been good since(knock on wood)! We were 1 month out of 5yr warranty and 140 miles out of last egr repair warranty this past April, and broke down in Benson Arizona on our way home. Ford would not help us, so to arbritration we went. We did recoup almost 1/2 of the bill, just this week. Heading to Quartzsite Arizona on mon morning, fingers crossedXXX! Have ordered a new 3500 Dodge Ram, its not in and we can't wait for Dec or Jan for it to arrive. Dealer will hold our order till we get home, unless we drive back and get it! doubtful..to much bad weather across 8 states at that time of yr. Love the trucks ride and comfort, have always had a Ford. but I guess we can love a Dodge too!! Dona

I have a 97 CC F250, with the 7.3PSD. It has 280,000 on the motor and original tranny. I also have a super chip and exhaust. I tow a 27' enclosed snowmobile trailer, and also a 12' motorcycle trailer. It is still going strong like the day I got it with 15,000 miles. I dont baby it. The body is like almost new.

Replaced items
GLow plug relay warranty
Fuel guage switch warranty
one set of batteries
2 more glow plug relay's
one set of glow plugs
3 fan belts
2 sets of front brakes
4 sets of tires

This truck has been the best ride I have ever owned. I plan on keeping it till she dies. Besides its paid for.
