My 2009 F350 6.4 came with the Maxx diesel tuner system on it. I can tell a difference in power between the 4 settings it has and get 1mpg less at the higher setting. My turbo boost runs at about 20% when holding highway speeds on level terrain, whether I am towing or not. Is this normal?
Also, should I only be getting 13 mpg avg when not towing and 10 when I am?

I get 12.5-13.5 on my 450 when not towing, but only 8-9 when towing. But I have a 17.400lb trailer. Sounds like the tuner isn't really helping you any. Have you tried it with the stock tune put back in?

I have never really heard of a tuner getting you more MPG than stock. I suppose one could be programed for that though.
So what is your MPG with it in the stock setting?? is that the 13 and 10 numbers?

I get 13-14 with the stock setting. I have talked with other 1 ton owners who say they get high teens when not towing. Maybe that is not realistic though.

People are notoriusly optimistic when telling others what mileage they get.

Anything that increases horsepower will also increase fuel usage.

buying something that increases power and not making use of the newly available power is silly.

Complaining that you use more fuel while making use of the additional power is even sillier.

If it take "X" amount of fuel to move "Y" amount of vehicle down the road at 65 mph, then it will take "Z" amount of fuel to do that. You could make the engine twice the size with 3x the available horsepower, and as long as you only drive down a straight and level highway at 65, you will use the same amount of fuel.

The 20% boost is normal the turbo is doing it's job. When towing and starting out it should go to around 25 -30 lbs of boost. If it doesn't then you need your turbo cleaned.

My 07 6.0 has the EGR delete, Banks inter cooler with high rise pipes, blue fuel spring and K&N air filter to help with fuel millage. I have the super chips heavy tow tune on it and towing a 13,700# 5th I get 10mpg. Not towing on the interstate at 65 I get around 16 mpg so you are not far off.

You should be able to" down tune" it to stock. Then calculate your mpg. We usually never buy a tune to increase mileage...simply another toy in a boy's world. When I want the HP, I've got it. I usually "baby" mine cuz I have the stock Ford tranny, which is not a friend to tunes:((((((((

newby59,
While this is my first post here I currently own F-450 with a tuned 6.4 twin turbo.
Just to be clear the "Maxx diesel tuner" you have is either a Black Maxx or Mini Maxx programmer. These tuners are still opinioned to be as good as any on the maket for our trucks. They come from a company called H&S perfomance. Both do basicly the same thing just the Black is bigger offering a larger sceen to see your trucks vital functions. (you can look at many different engine and transmission sensors but only 4 at a time) (you can clear your CEL codes and many other things with either of these programmers)

Buy pressing either of the two buttons on the right side of the screen you can raise or lower the power levels almost insantly through the 4 settings. (no power; mild; wild; hot)
Depending if the DPF/Cat (diesel partical filter/catalytic converter) deleat has been done on your truck. (look underneath at the exhaust in front of the rear axle and you'll either see your DPF and Cat are either in place OR removed with a 'test pipe' in their place. This programer works with our trucks with or without these pieces removed or inplace as long as it in the correct setting.
With DPF/Cat removed the power levels are:
Level 0: Stock (No Power)
Level 1: 80 HP (Mild)
Level 2: 160 HP (Wild)
Level 3: 250 HP (Hot)

These are ADDITIONAL HP at the rear tires the programmer adds over your trucks stock 350hp at the crank!

If your DPF/Cat are still in place your power out put will like 50% less (sorry I don't remember these numbers)

Also you should be hand calculating your mileage and not trusting the 'dream-o-meter'! While it's usually closer after your truck has a tune it's still off some.

Here is a link to the Black Maxx for your 2009 if you wanted to read up on them.

I read somewhere that today's MaxxFporce 7 's cannot be tuned by aftermarket tuners because IH has their controller locked. Can somebody confirm?

Thanks,
R.Frost
