New to the Diesel world!

I'm looking at purchasing an F250 between 2005-2008 diesel. Anything I should look for when inspecting the truck? I've read lots of posts about the 6.0 - 7.3L trucks and everyone seems to have their own opinion. So right now I'm leaning towards the 2006 6.0L and a 2008 6.4L.

I currently tow a bumper pull TT @ 4000# and looking to upgrade the TT early next year to a new TT with dry weight @ 6000#.

So mostly looking for pointers on what to look for mechanically and visually.

How about a Dodge with Cummins?

Details on the Dodge Cummins and what makes it "factually" better than Ford? I'm not opposed to a Dodge, I just want to know the differences.

If you go with the Ford get the 6.4. It's more dependable than the 6.0 and is a tow monster. Just sold my 2010 in Oct and it was an awesome truck.

If you want a Ford F250 diesel, just bite the bullet and get a 6.7 produced after March 2011. Too much trouble with the 6.0 and 6.4.

Most 2006 and 2007 Fords by now have been bullet proofed. Not all have studs but the high mileage ones can be checked with a ScangaugeII. My first check is the water tank, bad ones have a deposit collecting in the tank.
The studded ones have nuts on the head bolts that shows up outside the lower side of the valve cover.
No 6.0L owner should be without a properly programmed ScangaugeII. Even great for the 2008,-2010 Ford engines also.

After owning 2 6.0s, and 2 6.4s--I would look for an '07 in the 6.0, and a '10 in the 6.4.
These are the last years to be made, and any factory improvements will be there.
Outside of this, neither engine is cheap to repair, but the 6.4 is much more costly than the 6.0.

For now, I've decided on a 2000 F250 6.8L V10 gas engine. It should get me through for the 2-3 years. I found a one owner and it has recently had new shocks and tune-up completed. And it will certainly pull our current TT which has a GVW of 4350lbs

Lots of reading on the diesel stop forum about the woes of the 6.0 and 6.4L Ford diesels. The last year of the 6.0L they had it working pretty good. The 6.4 had iits problems and had lots of power, but was know as a fuel hog.

The old 7.3 was a real hard worker and a good engine. The transmission was a weak point but could be beefed up.

I would still avoid the 6.0 and 6.4L if you are looking for a good reliable truck....but that is my opinion as a mechanical engineer. Too may friends had these and everyone of them had issues.

The 6.8L V-10 is a good engine and with proper maintenance will give good service. There was an issue with them launching spark plugs.

I have a 2014 6.7L F350 and I love it. When I researched which diesel truck to buy I avoided the 6.0L because all of the diesel truck mechanics I spoke with said they were highly problematic. Guys who have owned them call them "the truck you have to buy twice" referencing all the fixes needed to make it a good engine. The 6.4 I found has issues with DPF clogging costing about $1000 to replace. There were a few other things I can't recall at the moment that also cost ~$1000 to fix. So I just avoided both engines all together and started looking for a 2012 6.7L. In my search I found my 2014 and I love. I pull a 31 Springdale 5ver with it and it works awesome. I had the V10 also but it was just a bit too short on the pull ability for my 5ver but then again I am heavier than your TT. Good luck with your new truck.
