I maybe buying a 2000 F250. I was wondering of issues with this truck.

The ball joints have been replaced and one other thing up front on truck has been changed.

What do I look for when buying a diesel to make sure it's a good truck and not POS. Unsure if I will get service record or not. it has 167,000 miles on it.

Also why do fuel injectors go out?

How much does a fuel filter cost?

What's the first thing I should have looked at by a pro to make sure it's okay?

The 6.0L diesel is a decent engine, if it has not been abused. People love to put programmer boxes on it, to increase the torque & horsepower of this engine. The engine was built by International for Ford. Common problems with this engine are blown head gaskets. The engine has 2 fuel filters. One is located on the drivers frame rail, & the other is on top of the engine. Poor fuel or fuel filters not being serviced, would be one reason for injector problems.

I believe that Ford has offered some extended warranty assistance on this motor, due to the head gasket problem. I would have this engine checked out by a local Ford dealer for previous history, & modifications.

The 7.3L is one of the best diesels Ford has built. Take off power is a little weak, but has good high end torque. You can install a larger turbo for better power. This engine usually gets good fuel mileage.

What do you mean by good fuel mileage? 10 MPG 15 MPG ?

Also from what I pulled of fords website replacing airfilter and fuel filters are needed right away.

How to check the injectors to see if they are good?

7.3 is a workhorse with the tranny being the weak link. Most trannys bail at around 125-150K. A heavy duty version is avaiable for replacement both aftermarket/Ford. It has one fuel filter located on top of the engine which also has a manually water drain.. injectors fail mostly due to lack of proper oil changes (injectors use high pressure motor oil to operate) tho like everything they do wear out. My 02 has over 160K with original injectors. If the truck has been decently cared for then it has many thousands of miles left in it. Have seen many with over 400K. My CC dually gets aprx 10mpg towing 18K (mountain/flat land avg. Some claim to get more mpg but mine stays abiut this avg. Did get 30 some mpg going down long mountain grade one time. got about 6 mpg climbing the up side.

the advice to carry spare fuel filter is quite valid for any diesel. I carry a spare all the time tho have never had to use it. Same for fan belt. Cam sensors do fail from time to time and a spare (international or ford preferred- not auto parts store) is a good idea. If the truck has had the recall for the CPS done then failure is not that likely. You need a 10MM wrench or socket to change it and about 10 minutes time.

If the truck is decent shape and the price is right then wouldn't hesitate about buying. Keep in mind that a replacement tranny is aprx $3K and up. I'm speaking of an automatic. Believe around $1000-1500 for shop replacement of clutch assy. Did not specify if auto/manual tranny.Fuel filters from ford are drop in cartridges where auto parts (I use purolator) can be had with filter and top as one piece. Much nicer to change

one item to check is the engine oil pan to see if there is any rust on the pan. Some engines have had problems with the engine oil pans rusting thru and leaking oil. The engine has to be R and R to change the pan because of the front cross member. Believe the leakers are mainly from salt country tho

Here is the link to the truck. Sioux Falls 2000 FORD F250 SUPER DUTY XLT CREWCAB 4X4 | Sioux Falls Ford in Sioux Falls
The outside looks good. I will take a further look tomorrow. The tranny issue scares me a bit. I bought a camper and it's a bit too much for my truck so It's this or over tow :S.

Any things you would recommend replacing if I bought it?

Any things you would recommend looking at when buying?

This truck is in South Dakota.

Thanks for your help BTW.

I pulled a 38' 5er with a 2001 F250 and averaged about 11 when towing. I had no problems with the truck at all and put over 100,000 on it. The truck averaged about 14-16 MPG in town and about 18 to 19 on thr road without a tow.

The turn radius is lacking but its a big vehicle and that's likely the reason. It does not have transmission assisted braking something that would be nice in the mountains.

Good luck.
