A 2005 should be a 6.0 engine. Just do a search for 6.0 powerstroke problems and make up your own mind. Although many have had no problems, I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole. JMO

A Ford 6.0L can have lots of problems due to some bad designs from International, and bad designs on mandated emissions equipment. With a LOT of meticulous maintenance, they can be great. Without it, you can put a lot of money into it updating parts and maintenance and then it can be great. If you know nothing, and aren't willing to put lots of time in to it, then don't.

If you take care of the 6.0 PSD they run well. The death of them is the emission system, ie the egr cooler. Have an 2004 with 174,000 miles. EGR cooler went out on it. Do the research on the truck. Good engine except the emission system. Some have trouble some don't. If it has the original cooler expect it to go out around 90-100,000 mile range. It's not a matter of if but when.

I have a 2006 F250 with the 6.0 diesel. It is actually a good (not the best Ford has used, by any stretch) engine. As others have already stated, the problems come from the stuff stuck to the engine. The EGR coolers and the oil coolers are known items that can show their ugly sides. I am approaching 117K miles on mine. The most significant work I have had done on mine is a full injector and FICM replacement. The injectors don't act well if regular and proper maintenance is not performed (oil changes, filter changes - including fuel filters).
Knock on wood, mine still runs like a scalded dog when I want her to. She may kick the bucket tomorrow but, as of today, I like my paid for truck.

The 6.0 has a horrible reputation but as others have said, some are bad and some are good. I took a chance and bought mine six months ago for a good price knowing I might have to shell out $4k if it goes bad. Google is your friend.

If you really need (want?) a Ford diesel, save your money for a 6.7, 2011 and later. The early 6.7's had some problems with the valve train and a few with turbo failures but most were on emissions deleted and 'chipped' trucks. The 2011's had 400 Hp and 800 lb ft of torque but they also need a couple gallons of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) every few thousand miles though most are virtually bullet proof with proper care. Wander over to the Ford Truck Enthusiast site for lots of good information on Ford diesels: Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums - Ford truck and SUV owners and enthusiasts Community And Information Source.

Stay away from the IH engine. Ford really went above and beyond with the 6.7l. I have always been a big 7.3l fan but the more I look back at it the more I realize the 6.7l is so much better. IH got sloppy with the 6.0 and the 6.4l and I will tell anyone to stay away from both of them.
Don't let the DEF get between you and some good quality iron. I made the move 4 years ago and bought a 2011 with the 6.7l and I fell in love. The power, the torque, the fuel economy and the ride were all there. Most recently I bought a 2015 with the 6.7l and I'm so glad I left dodge 4 years ago and came back to ford.
Just be mindful that the 2011 and 2012 6.7l used ceramic bearings in the turbo. Some people had problems with turbo failures but I never did and I put almost 100,000 miles on the 2011.
Best of luck in your decision!
Mookie

Don't believe all the 6.7 hype. We are seeing quite a few with bearings out of the bottom end. Some with rods hanging out the side and others seized.
Unless its under factory warranty I would not have one.
Well I wouldn't have one then either way but you get the point.

I had a F250 2003 with same motor. Bad design. Ford bought it back after they paid over $27,000 of repair under warranty. Bad International design and dangerous to use. At one time for now reason , everything shut down, no power no brake nothing niet. Scary, this happened several times

Amazing that none of the Ford forums are reporting that nor are the two local dealers.

No you did NOT have a 2003 with a Ford proprietary design 6.7 since that engine was first introduced in May 2010 as a 2011. The 2003 began the model year with the virtually bullet proof Navistar 7.3 or possibly an early production mid year intro 6.0 which was not one of Ford's better ideas

I agree I don't talk to many people that know about it either but I have one a part now. Had one 2 months ago. One was a good customer with perfect service record.
Ford is well aware whether they admit it or not.

I never mentioned I had a 7.3 that was more reliable. Mine was among the first infamous 6.0L that lasted 3 years with many modifications. Was a faulty design with turbo , engine gasket (oil leak) electronic and software (they had to reduce power)
