Excepting the mileage, 8.5 mph on average pulling and 12/13 driving around, I really like ours. Sure out performs the 01, f350 on the long grades in Penn. Vir. and out west and is much quieter, some ask if it’s diesel.

I have been hearing good things about the new Ford 6.7L Diesel. Ford started making thier own motors again. I have a 6.0L.

I know someone who had a F550 pulling a 22k lbs 5'Ver.. It's a dog going up hills. He sold the truck. Weird, but I know someone who pulls a 44 foot 5'ver with an old F350 7.3. Looks funny when you see this huge 5th wheel and you start looking for the tow vehicle, but it works.

40K for a 08 used truck?? that seems steep to me. I'd think a new one wouldn't that much more if you leave off unessasary option and you would for sure get a better inteset rate .
I'd skip the 6.4 (navstar) and go to that 6.7 Ford engine in a new one.

You can not buy a Navistar diesel engine in a new Ford. Not sure how you put that thought together.

Dan Snyder from Ford is supporting and attending the 2011 National Rally in Urbanna, VA this fall and we feel fortunate to have him.

PS: Navistar Diesel Engines always have been and still are "Built In The USA."

Hello Matt, The 6.4 Ford (Navistar made engine) is a strong power plan. The trans is a good one too. I sure like the truck but the mileage is bad, but when I'm pulling it's pretty hard to get the smile off my face. Towing with my 08 F350 Dually with a 3.73 gear I average 8 to 10.5 MPG . I always do the speed limit 65 to 70, I can't drive 55. Crusing the speed limit 65 to 70 I have seen 14 mpg.
The F450's have a 4.30 gear so the mileage would be a little different. The power running up hills would be Great, also the brakes are bigger on the F450.
The price of $ 40,000 may be a little high but you get what you pay for. I did price a F550 for $ 92,500 custom, also a F450 Lariat loaded for a $ 62,500 list but Ford has a pile of rebates this time of the year.
Good Luck Shopping !!

Yes I know that. I meant I'd skip that used 2008 6.4 diesel truck that is $40K and get a new one. I didn't think I had to be that specific.

I just bought a 2007 F-350 and the PO deleted the ecu/EGR, put in a Banks inner cooler, high rise intake and exhaust and a cat back 5" exhaust system. The truck runs fine and gets 18 mpg running around town and 14.5 towing my 39' 5th wheel. His brother is the head mechanic at a Ford dealership and helped him with it. Might be cheaper than replacing the truck...

I bought the F450 6.4 new in 08. I now have 73000 miles with no problems-and I work it hard. We full-time, pulling a heavy fiver, and have traveled one summer all through the Maritimes, last summer all up and down the Rockys, and this summer all through Alaska. Some pretty serious grades. I have the 4.88 gear ratio and its a 4x4. So as others have said, depending on the mountains we're in, pulling nearly 19000 lbs, I can get anywhere from 7.5 to 9.5 or 10. This doesn't appear a lot less than many others are getting with a lot lighter load. Where I see the big difference is that I don't increase the mileage a lot when I'm not towing. It goes up to about 12 mph then.

But, I sure do love the way this truck just plugs along. We had a 02 F350 7.3 pulling a much lighter fiver before this one, and there is no comparison. And I had over 100000 on that 7.3, with only an alternator needing replacement, just didn't have the umph this one does on the grades.

I too have heard good things about the new Ford engine, but also a little concern that they "downsized" the F450, taking away some of the main reasons to go up to that size. Apparently smaller wheels, smaller brakes, and I don't know what else.

Good luck on whatever you do.

I was amendment that I would not buy a 6.0 until I saw this truck. They replaced all the known problem components with good ones and it is quite the truck. I hooked up my 13,000 5th wheel trailer and it didn't seem to matter. You know it's back there but it takes the hills fine and still gets 14.5 mpg. Can't ask for anything more. I was amazed that I got 18 mpg driving around town. That's better than my F-150 gasser. I love this truck and glad I bought it. So replacing a few known bad components will make this truck rock and roll and still get good millage!
