Why did they stop making the 7.3 ?

The 01 F350 I own has the 7.3L in it. I only have 70,000 miles on it. It is a work horse. But I was curious why they quit making the 7.3L?

Is there any particular Power Stroke that produces the best performace and power over another one?

Just a matter of time before I sell or trade my truck since the DW does not like driving a stick.

The 7.3 could not come close to passing the ever greater emissions regulations. It also required a major revamp to make it quieter and stronger. The 6.7L in the 2011 and newer Superduties are a great engine. Havent talked to a customer yet that was not happy with theirs. Even close or over 100K on the clock.

Just avoid the 6.0! Those engines had more problems than Lindsey Lohan.

I always thought it was because they weren't selling enough parts and service so they introduced the 6.0 and all of it's inherent issues.

I got one of the last ones made in 2003... I have 165k miles on it and never had a lick of trouble. Other than the rear fenders rusting (like they all did), I know she's good for at least another 200k+...

It's an ancient workhorse. Old, outdated technology. Power demands changed. Emissions demands changed.

At least statements like this make 6.0s cheap for the ones who really know how to work them and surprise the ones who make these comments.

Totaly agree

Mine is till going strong and worth more to me then I paid 6 years ago.
Fuel mileage and towing power equals any others. Specialty with programed for the past 6 years.

This engine is great. It's Fords attitude that stinks.
Remember that the 6.0 out sold GM And Ram combined.

Not really, they are selling for big money in our area. Newer 6.0L with average miles are selling for mid to high 20s.

Say what you will... That "old and outdated technology" will do everything your newer close to $60k truck will... I paid $35k for that truck in 2003 and can sell it today with all the miles on it for $15k (check NADA). That's a pretty good return on a traditionally depreciating asset. Only time will tell if that $60k truck will be worth $15k in 10 years...

.......
I Agree the emissions demands changed. As far as the rest , Just what part is different? They are the same basic computerized common rail injected 4 valve V8 Diesel just in a different size. I did not see a real power difference between the two.
While I will agree the emissions equipment on these 2 engines changed I don't see much else that did.

Now the OLD 6.9L-7.3L (IDI) Indirect injection engine is old tech completly different design and sweet is what I would call it.

The latest version, and the only one made by Ford, the 6.7 which came out in 2011 has all the corn binders beat badly in horsepower and torque. 400 HP and 800 ft pds of torque. A lot of owners delete all the emissions and put a tune in them and they run much better and get better fuel mileage.

The 7.3L is a 2 valve engine that uses a HUEI fuel injection system.

Those two go together.
One uses oil to inject fuel, the other uses straight fuel that gets injected at MUCH higher pressures for a cleaner burn with more power. Completely different intake/exhaust system.

I have a 7.3, and love it. It wasn't a 60k truck.
It's still old technology.

I agree it'll do what a 6.7 will do, just much slower.
