More power

I went to Cummins today to see if I could get more power. They said Iím set for 350hp and thatís all it will do. I thought some of you guys had uprated your hp/torque. 2017 Verona VBH L9

Had mine uprated to 1150 ft lbs torque from 1050 stock on models through 18. The 19s are already at 1150. The horsepower stay the same.

Here is what I was told by my local Cummins service center when I asked about upgrading from 1050 to 1150 torque. They said "because of internal cooling components in order to up the torque to 1150 the HP would have to be reduced". I am assuming EGR cooling system has been updated in 19's and above.

This engine is capable of so much more but the nose on the M2 106 just does not allow for any more cooling than is there already. Buddy of mine has same year, same motor, in a DP with side radiator and is 425HP 1400 torque or there about. I had asked a Cummins rep at the Hershey show several years ago why so many different HP ratings for the L8.9 and without hesitation he said cooling. And explained the differences between all the HP rated motors, and they all start with same bottom end but are different in Turbo's, injectors, injector pumps and Tunes. The bottom three HP rated motors all share same hardware only differ in tunes, top three all share same hardware and only differ in tunes. Ours are at the top to of the bottom rated three even though they did make that slight upgrade on the 19's and up.

This is what I have been told by Cummins at different locations and times.

Makes sense. If you take a look at the Dynaquest II from Dynamax. It is an M2 chassis with and L8.9 also but it has 450 HP and 1250 torque and has a much larger grill opening.

The same is true of the older Cummins engines as well. Our M-11 is set at 400hp/1425 Tq which I've been told is the top of our "Hardware" package. To boost it to 450/1450 or higher will require new injectors.

The good part in all this, is with so much power that is left on the table with these engines because of cooling they will run forever.

The Allison 3000MH is limited to 450 hp and 1250 ft lbs. Doubtful that Cummins would uprate either hp or torque to more than those limits. And, if done aftermarket you could lose your warranty.

I thought mine was lacking on power too. Got a Scan Gauge D and saw when I had the pedal to the floor I was getting throttle position readings in the 70's. I pushed harder on the throttle and got readings in the upper 80's which resulted in getting the power I was looking for. You have to stand on that pedal.

There is some information on the web about shimming the gas pedal assembly off the floor at the bottom two screws using washers. Results seem to vary.

Very interesting I have also read where some get more power using cruise pulling hills. Thought that was weird but that would make sense if go peddle is not going to floor on some units. Mine does not seem to suffer from such problem, but i will both visually inspect plus check scan gauge next time it out.

I have a question, this is direct from Scan Gauge instructions pg 26 "In some vehicles, a closed throttle will read 0 and full throttle will
read 100. Other vehicles will have a higher value than 0 for a closed
throttle and a full throttle value less than 100". So what is 100% throttle value going to be? Does this mean that it is proportionate 10% idle 90% full or what?

From what I've seen others post it seems on our Freightliners we are all seeing O on closed and up to 97 on full.
