where can I find what the NJ law says about registring a P30 Stepvan as an RV? Also can anyone tell me where I can insure such a beastie? I have already done most of the conversion and am starting to worry about the legal end of getting it on the road (kind of backwards thinking I know... should have looked into this more b4 spending all sorts of money and huge amounts of time...)
Thanks! - George

I don't think I would pose that question to a license clerk. I'd just take the existing registration down and renew it and not tell them anything. Let any questions come up as part of any process and see what happens.

The issue I have isn't with just getting it registered (I already have it registered, but its registered as a Step Van). When I try to insure it as a motor home, my insurance agent tells me I can only insure it as a commercial vehicle and the premium is insane. On top of that, it doesn't have the same perks as RV insurance w/ regards to providing protection for my belongings...

Still looking for help - anyone from NJ done this before? Any other states want to chime in to lend info on how your state handles it?

Thanks guys/gals.

George, welcome to iRV2.

In Delaware the vehicle has to have a bed, toilet, and kitchen with water, to be registered as an RV.

I would think NJ would have similar requirements.

You may have to find the right person in your motor vehicle department who knows how to handle these things.

had a friend that lost his license, dwi. when he got it back insurance was out of sight. painted a stripe down the side of his work van and registered it as a motorhome. i lost contact with him a few years ago. call dmv(they are privitized now, no more lazy state workers) they will answer questions.

Just talked to Trenton DMV today.

They said the following:

Come to Trenton office with
1) Current Title
2) Penciling of VIN
3) Pictures of rig outside and inside showing conversion
4) $20 for title conversion

Conversion must have:
Sink, Stove, Bed, Toilet

I will let you all know how things go as they go.

Any info anyone else has is greatly appreciated.

Thanks all

George
