F250 3.55 transmission towing capabilities

Iím looking at purchasing a Vilano 5th wheel with a GVWR of 16,000lbs. I called Vanleigh to see if they felt my 2012 F250 Super Duty King Ranch Crew Cab, axle ratio 3.55, 6.2L turbo diesel would tow it. They replied ďAs long as your payload is above 3500 and the tow is above 14,500 you should be good.Ē I called my local a Ford dealership and gave them my VIN and they said I should be able to tow it.

I read others online that recommend an F350 or at least a dually vehicle. Iím looking for thoughts on this. Thanks!

You are going to be on the verge of overloading that F250.
If you spend the $$ to upgrade the gear ratio to 3:73 instead of the 3:55 that would help, but that 16000 5th wheel tow rate is pretty high for a F250. A F350 would be
better. But people do it all the time so good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply. I figured it would be pushing it. Have to make the decision to upgrade the truck or not.

This question comes up from time to time. Even if your truck can tow it can your
truck STOP it??

I'm hoping to buy a Keystone Cougar 5th wheel that is 34 feet long and weights
about 12-13K in weight and I'm planning on getting a one ton because I prefer to
have that safety margin.

While neither of the trucks discussed are MDTs, I would say that If I was towing with the 250, I would be tense and it wouldn't be a comfortable run..

No one has ever complained that they didn't have enough truck...

Stop right there. The payload of 250 crew cab diesel 4x4 is under 2,000 lbs.

No way. It's not the drive train, it's the payload. A F350 SRW would be on the borderline, depending on actual loaded pin weight of the 5er.

What I really wonder is the rear axle weight as well...I was looking at the same issue but SWR vs Dually in a 3500
the 5th wheels Im looking at 16K-18K GVWR range and the dealer saying I dont need a dually for that...I find that hard to believe off hand considering rear axle weight loads and total payload.
Vanleighs are nice units...if they had a bunk room Id be considering them hard also

Many dealers are clueless about the actual payload: I showed one kid the tire loading sticker on a beautiful CCLB 6.7 4x4 F350 Lariat that said 3152. His manager came over with a printout on from the website with over 4000lbs circled: the max payload for a regular cab, gas 4x2 truck. Sigh.

Worse yet they went on to say every 5th wheel on the lot was handled with SWR Duramaxs...Of course I thought ...they are all dry and not doing 10-20K a year on them following YOU around are they?

That particular Ford dealer didn't have any duallies to get rid of so...

Going with F350 DRW

Looking at moving forward with a used F350 DRW, 2012 or newer. Iíll feel better/safer towing the beast. Now to pay for it
