It the latest in anti theft devices. Even if someone wanted to steal it in the middle of the night, they wouldn't know how to shift it and would still be there in the morning trying to figure it out.

Or they wouldn't make it far, because they'd be stuck in 1st gear, lol.

It's a 13 speed. Starting at 5:15, he goes through 1-5 in the main box in the basement (low range), then 2-5 (6-9, if you prefer) in the main box in high range, splitting the high range gears to give 13 speeds total.

The left stick is the splitter, the center stick is the main box and the right stick (skull shift knob) is low/high range. The splitter and low/high range have been converted from pneumatic switches to sticks, but the sticks still control pneumatic valves.

In my youth I drove one with a 5 spd and a 3 spd. That's fifteen foreword and three in reverse. It was in a 1947 KB11 International.

Later my dad bought White Freightliners with two four spds. That's sixteen foreword and four in reverse.

You shifted by hooking your arm through the steering wheel and using both hands to grind gears.

Driving our Journey is a dream after those.

When multi trans combos' where popular the CDL did not exist. I started on a 4X5 twin stick and a chauffeurs license, wasn't even a driving test. There are very few left that can even drive one any more, I liked them put way too many miles on them and if you try to take my single stick 13 speed away from me I'l inflict bodily injury on you, I'm spoiled.
