A question of tire balancing...

I am told by a busy and very competent HDT repair shop that they do not bother balancing tires on the rigs..not even the steering tires...been doing a bit of digging and i know that this can be done..

Any reason for this and do you have your tires balanced ?

Thanks
Grassy

Some folks use beads,Some powders,,I look for a tire shop with a big tire balancer

The reason many shops do not balance big rig tires is because they can not. they do not have the needed hardware.

Had tires installed last year. The same shop that does our trucking company rigs.
They told me they required steer tires to be balanced but not drive wheels. Said it was the provincial law.
Anybody ever hear of that.

i kind had figured that the tires are slower moving and had much more weight on them but I was pushing a few around the other day and the felt unbalanced...the rig does shake at different times and i cannot see any good in this..my idea is to remove as much vibration as possible..

the shake is much more noticeable when bb tailing..

I shall ask about the equipment..

Look into centramatic balancers. They work great.

As an ex commercial tire guy I will say. Some folks don't balance any of their tires. Some balance all, some only balance steers. Personally, I even balance my trailer tires.

I just bought a new 315/80R/22.5 Michelin to match my other front one, recently replaced, and was talked out of having it balanced by the installer. I do not notice any difference in the drive. As an after thought, I should have insisted to have him do it.

That is really smart! An out of balance trailer tire can set off a lot of vibration that can make things come loose, bolts screws and such.

I use the Centramatics on the tractor/truck as well. The trailer tires are balanced as well. If a truck tire is out of balance enough, it will have an odd wear pattern that can affect handling, hard braking, etc.

I've never had any tires but the fronts balanced on any of our DP's. Never had any problems either. I just don't run 90+ mph very often (and yes, the MH will, but I need another OD gear to top 100).
