Protecting the front of my new trailer.
On my first outing with my new trailer I was blessed with dry roads and sunny weather. I should have gone directly to my destination but didn't. Stopped to show it off to friends and family members. (next time they come to me.)
The next road trip was 90 miles from Oskaloosa, Ia. to Shueyville, Ia. on a day that was threatening snow showers. I tried my best to get out of Oskaloosa before it all started, but a few things prevented me from departing as early as I wanted. I started to run into snow flakes just south of I 80 on HWY 21. I stopped at the truck stop for lunch (missed breakfast and knew if I didn't stop eating until 8pm was possible. No food in the new trailer). Came out to find a good dusting of snow on the truck. The parking lot was dry and the snow was just blowing off of most of it. I knew the interstate would be damp so I decided to take the two lane road. Didn't think about the farmers in the area and the recent farm equipment on the roads so I picked up a LOT of road grime on my trailer. I have plastic fenders on my drive axles but with the deck gone from the back of the truck what gets kicked up goes real high. Of course after the trip it got COLD, real cold and not chance to wash.
My next road trip was heading back to Concordia for some changes. (too long a story for this topic). I knew is was forecast for rain and was hoping for a heavy rain that would wash some or most of the road grime off. I was granted and the trailer actually doesn't look too bad right now(from a distance). Still too cold to wash.
Spent a good portion of yesterday looking for a flexible mud flap that I could cut in half and add to the plastic fender. No luck. Midwest Wheel had very heavy stiff flaps but nothing that I thought would work. They suggested an RV supplier. I went to Ketelsen RV and nothing in stock. They would be happy to show me a photo and order one in, but I can do that on my own computer and probably for less money. Thanks but no thanks. Stopped at Riteway Trailer and they have a "grass Skirt" that fits into the receiver hitch in various lengths for $300. If I thought it would do any good I would buy it, but with out a deck to catch the high flying stuff, I'm thinking it would be a waste of money.
Next stop Home Depot. They have carpet runners on a roll. It's 24 inches wide and you can get as long a piece as you want. (up to 100 foot roll). I believe I will measure my space with the suspension deflated and get a piece of that stuff and try it out. I will use the largest fender washers I can find and space them out so they just touch on a piece of thin flat stainless steel (if I can find it).
Comments and Suggestions appreciated. I found a few paint chips already so this will be done before my next move.
