Semi for RV use?
Hey everyone i am a owner operator tuck driver, with a 2009 volvo 670 with a sleeper.(a regular semi truck). I am thinking about getting out of the trucking business for a while and use the truck as a RV. I was wondering if i just put "NOT FOR HIRE" or "RV" on the side? Do i stop at scales since i would be an "RV"? Also would i need to keep my CDL? Thanks

Your drivers license and all will depend on your home state laws.

I used to be a O&O for many years. My question is , why would you want to do this?

I have seen many otr trucks used as RV pullers or converted to a Toterhome. The ones I have seen have not for hire RV use only, so wouldn't have to cross scales. I think you would have to licence it as an RV as well.

Your signature doesn't identify your state. Here's a link to a site that has information on what's required in each state to register your truck as an RV. That would be a first step, I believe.
RVs and Motor Home DMV Registration at DMV.org: The Unofficial DMV Guide

Howdy
Glad you asked this question as friends at one point and I had this talk as they were thinking about the same things as you were... As long as you have commerical plates on the truck you have to keep your CDL license and pull into scales however if you take off your D.O.T number and lettering on the side of the coach and change your plates to personal plates or R.V plates you are not required to scale in or have a CDL as you would be considered a R.V. but in order to be a R.V and get those plates you would have to do some modifition and meet some specs to be considered an R.V so D.O.T ans scale in would not hassle you because even tho you are converting her over she is still a tractor by factory best of luck

There is a company in Canada that converts off-lease OTR tractors into RVs. One thing they do is remove one of the drive axles. I seem to remember that was key to being able to drive them without a CDL. There is a link on this forum somewhere. Was about a year ago.

For tax or fee (Registration type) reasons you may need to investigate having the class of your Tractor changed from "Commercical Semi Tractor" (however it is currently titled) to Persional RV hauler (Or again however your state labels it) Generally in this "Soak the businessman" society we have (The idiots in Congress (opposite of PROgress) do not understand that every dollar you pay in taxes goes to the cost of transportation and that in turn goes to the selling price, at least 2.5 times over. Thus the RV tower is less expensive at the annual re-registration time)
Or just go here
TRAIL-HAULER.COM and trade your existing rig in.
