Springfield project.

Bob and Heidi have arrived to our NH "facility".

We'll do a mod which we will "share".

Primary "fix" is to modify the pin box so that fifth doesn't ride nose high. It's not a straight pin box and as is can't go up any higher.
But Bob is coming up with "other" "needs".

OK, progress report.

We found a level parking lot to see what was the extent of a "disagreement"
between 2L truck, ET Jr. and a SpaceCraft.

About 4 1/2 inches of disagreement. Several option we discussed and considered, from minimal to "very radical" and we settled on an compromise solution. Modify Marsha's 29,000 lb box.
The box was cut down and new base plate and a new pin were welded in.

We modified the "original" a bit. The original had 3/16" pin plate with an inch reinforcing backer. We opted for 1/2" pin plate and a 1/2" backer.

Also the pin is double welded, an internal chamfer (between the plate and the backer) is filled with a weld (then there is the top weld).
Robert did FEA analysis and "the fix" is roughly equal in strength and stiffer.
The unit is currently hanging in the "paint shop".

OK, Jack and Rod, here's the final "skinny" on the project.
Wayland's truck, although not level is set up correctly, the top of the rails is at 40 inches. ET Jr. sitting on top of the deck is at 49 1/2 inches (unfortunately).

To get the SpaceCraft perfectly level, we needed to cut the pin box by 4 1/2 inches.

For various reasons we opted to cut it down 3 1/2 inches. We noticed that that last inch hardly made any difference in a trailer that long (other than making the level "happy") but was going to create lots of grief in other areas.
So here's the first hook up of the new pin box.

Note that we still have a pretty "generous" deck clearance for off camber turns.

Thanks Henry,

Haven't heard from Marsha on if she will put one of those pin boxes on my possible build. She and Wyatt may be crunching numbers as we type..........

I know I will need to take the deck off. and was planning to add a dovetail to it now that the Mini has been replaced with something with much more ground clearance. I will also most of the time be loading a motorcycle in to the box with a couple bicycles and hopefully my tool boxes. My hitch sits at 46 inches, the deck at 48 and the top of the frame rails are 37 3/4. This was on a seemingly level gravel lot with just a tape measure and my eye. Couldn't find my 4 foot level to get a true level measurement. I also have 53 inches from the back of the box to the front edge of the binkley pin clasp.
