My '01 W22 Workhorse Chassis brake rotors are cracked again for the second time in 3 years. I have an appointment for service on Monday.
Back in 2006, three of four rotors had large cracks which the manufacturer replaced under a delayed-start warranty. I hope they replace them again and I can make it until the full recall begins!

abarkl, Which rotors are cracked? Have you been able to identify if there is or was elevated heat condition in relation to the cracked rotor? Good luck with your repairs. Keep your receipts.

I won't know until Monday which rotors are cracked but the symptoms are obvious when pushing the pedal--thumping noise and feeling like that of an ABS system.

The cracked rotors on the Workhorse W22 chassis are a sure sign of failed brake components and will be repaired/replaced under the current Workhorse interim program per the regional rep. I won't pay a dime!

abarkyl, A pulsing pedal can also be manifested by a warped rotor as well. At the right speed it could present similarly to an ABS cycle but one would also get feedback through the steering wheel.

To confirm a cracked rotor I would take a look and see if the rotor is cracked. It'll be interesting to observe if the forensic evidence (powder) will be present as described in previous posts from the attendees that went to Greenville.

Service center rep says front rotors have the large cracks again and the rear brakes are worn. Pictures need to be taken and forwarded to Workhorse regional rep who will make a decision for repair until recall parts can be installed in September.

Service center rep claims Workhorse is still deciding what to do about my cracked rotors. He sent pictures and descriptions of the problems. He keeps referring back to the supposed brake recall bulletin to be released in September and what to do with mine until then.

abarkl, The decision is pretty easy if you have a stuck rotor or the forensics, photo evidence, indicate that a seizure existed. That's why they need the pictures.

Service center rep says Workhorse rep has denied repairs and that damage is not due to heat buildup. They are sending pictures and estimate of repairs.

What else could cause such a problem?

I haven't seen the pictures yet but assume they are the same as last time; three of four rotors (except one front) were cracked all the way through. They have said that both front rotors are cracked this time and the rear pads are worn.

If heat didn't crack the rotors I would sure be interested in what they think did and would think they should give an answer two sets of cracked rotors in 3 years is not normal wear and tear. If after jumping up and down in all the right places doesn't give you any results I would look into after market rotors. They have been advertised and I believe there have been some threads about them here.

abarkyl, I would make the best case that I could to document that the same rotors were changed "recently" and that these replacement rotors exhibited the same characteristic as the last set. It is unlikely that you personally caused the failure however I don't know what the circumstances are and how you operate your vehicle. There must be some type of forensic that will point to why the same rotors cracked all the way through in 3 years. I had my old rotors for 6 years and never developed a crack through the rotor. It will be interesting to see the pictures.

In regard to replacement rotors, I would only buy the OE rotors that were provided with your vehicle when it was new. The rotors themselves are very robust units. The JLP SPID option brakes have 15.0 x 1.44 inch vented rotors.

We contacted Workhorse roadside assistance yesterday and attempted to plead our case directly. Brandy told us that all she could suggest is for our service manager to ask the Workhorse regional service manager again to review our request for repairs. She also said she would email the regional service manager and ask for clarification and have him contact us directly. He did call today and left a voice message to the effect that our request for repairs was denied, end of story!

Three days have gone by and I still haven't heard back from the service manager. Perhaps this headache will disappear and I can use the insurance money along with some savings and finally get my Cummins on a Freightliner chassis with real brakes!
