12 volt toad wire for W20D chassis

I have a W20D chassis and tow a 2009 CRV. The battery in the toad dies so I want to add a line from the MH to keep the CRV charged. I was told not to do this because the alternator in the MH cannot handle the additional load.

I have read many related posts but never about a problem with alternators/12 volt charge lines.

Any info appreciated.

How old is the battery in your CRV?

I installed a Toad-Charge and it works very well. A little pricey but I don't have to worry about any back-feed. Here's the website TOAD-CHARGE Dinghy Vehicle Battery Charger/Maintainer .

If the battery in the toad is mostly fully charged when you hook it up, it's not going to harm the RV alternator. The Honda won't draw as much power as the accessories in the RV. No need for a Toad-Charge, they are over priced and do nothing that a wire wouldn't do. I installed a charge wire between the RV chassis batteries and the Toad battery. I wired it into the 6 pin tow harness. Near the batteries at both ends, I have auto reset circuit breakers. (20 amp) These will trip if the wire is shorted or if either battery tries to draw too much current. Problems solved. I laugh at the Toad-Charger, it has pretty LED lights, but you can't see them unless the Toad's hood is up. When I plug in my umbilical cord, my lights and battery all hook up with one connection.

The only time I worry about the current draw is when I start the RV. The current draw of the starter might try to draw from the Toad battery. I hooked up a test light to see if it happened when I started the RV, I saw no drop out of the charge wire, so the 20 amp CB didn't even reach that threshold while starting.

The battery is original to the CRV. I had it tested and it checks out great. I think it is the brake device is what is causing the battery to die. The compressor draws a lot of current.

Having the charge line added tomorrow.

Thanks for the input.

Do you know if there are diodes installed in the toad wiring? Could the taillights be running down the battery?

Do not know if there are diodes in the tail lights. Will check.

You do not mention what kind of aux braking system you have on the toad. I used a two Schotsky diode isolator to power my aux brakes, one input from the toad battery and one from the RV provide the power to the toad brake system.

The alternator can put out 140 amps. Keeping the toad battery charged is not going to hurt it.

Hi Steve
Can you explain the Schotsky wiring you use. Also what Schotsky devices you are using.

If that battery is 5 years old it's about time for a new one anyway. Tony
