Unhappy 2002 W22 w/Cracked Evans Valve Case/Cover

Investigating why my A/C doesn't seem to be working, and I noticed that the Evans Valve case/cover is cracked in several areas as you can see from the attached photo.

The area affected appears to be a cover, but I can not tell whether it is mechanically coupled to anything beneath it. Hesitate to try and remove it.

Can anyone advise me on this situation?

Also, please note that my Evans Valve is controlled electrically. If I elect to install a vacuum operated $10 Murray Valve #74612 (Oemy Tech Tip) in place of a new $200 Evans Valve, what vacuum source line would it get spliced into?

Thanks

If the valve is not leaking coolant , you can test the operation by running the engine up to temperature with the heater on , feel the hose temperature, then switch to max A/C , at which time the valve will close and in a couple of mins. the temperature of one hose at least will drop ; due to lack of coolant circulation.
If the valve is operational , then use silicone sealant over the cracks , to prevent road spray intrusion.

Is the OP's problem an unusual one, or there something afoot with these that I am hitherto unaware of?

(he asks, whilst mentally reviewing the on hand JB Weld supply...........)

Mine would open and close, but there was no control. I followed the troubleshooting guide from Evans and found the valve to be bad. I replaced it for a lot less than $200. I also replaced the heater hoses and the rest of the motor hoses while I was at it. The new valve requires an electrical adapter, but it comes with the valve.
