Just another "new guy " here ... I am in the process of purchasing a 2005 R-Vison Trail Lite 28 ft Class A unit which has the GM 8.1 Workhorse chassis . I am try to find out if this model has the Allison transmission or a GM RV trans . Can someone tell me how to check to see which trans this unit has ?. If it is a Workhorse chassis did they all come with the Allison ?. Any information would be appreciated .
Regards:

Jeff

On order to give you an accurate answer, we will need to know if the Workhorse chassis is a P32 or a W-xx series. ALL the W series chassis have Allison transmissions, not so with the P32. If you will provide the last 8 digits of the chassis Vin #, we can confirm for you.

Also, The W has the straight front axle and the P has independent front suspension.

Most all 05 WH chassis had the 1000 5 speed trans. There will be a switch on the dash to turn the overdrive on and off.

Point of Order: A 2005 motorhome chassis will not have a 6-Speed Allison transmission. In order to be the proud owner of a 6 speed Allison transmission, one needs to have W Series and the 10th digit in your VIN# MUST be a 6 or greater.

That's the break point.

I have a 2006 Trail Lite W18 with a hydromatic transmission #4L85 not an allision. The 10th didget in my vin is a 6. I have no switch on the dash to turn the over drive on or off. My last 8 are 63412362

Cacti, That's what I was going to go with as I believe the vehilce could be a P Series. The GM 4L85e electronic 4 Speed automatic transmission was standard in all GVWs of 18K or less in 2005.

The P sereis was retired in 2005 and the W-18 came into being for model year 2006 and beyond.

Thank you to all for the great information . I will post the VIN # as soon as the dealer opens . I will request the VIN # and have the sales rep look under the front end an tell me if it is a coil spring or straight axle . Update a bit later .
Thanks again .....

Ok.........I spoke to the sales rep . The coach has a coil spring front suspension with the last 6 digits of 391931 . He seemed to know the units well and said it does NOT have an Allison trans but has the heavy duty GM 4 speed trans . He felt ( opinion) that the short chassis like this 28 foot and being a lite it didn't need the Allison . Do I have any concerns with the GM trans ?. Thanks again for your help .

No not at all. The GM 4L85E is in wide use on Workhorse Chassis and has proven to be a relaible unit. This transmission is also in use on GM/WCC Class C RV Chassis as well.

Cacti: I did indeed mis-speak when I said "all the W series have Allisons". I forgot about the W16/18 using the GM tranny. Sorry if I added confusion to this thread. Ed
