Although I don't have an official press release on this new feature, Workhorse will soon provide me with information that will detail that going forward all Allison transmissions, T1000 and MH2100 will feature "six" forward speeds.
The main benefit of the 6-speed will be its double-overdrive. With the double-overdrive in place Workhorse will provide a new differential with a lower gear rating. I understand that with the ratios in the 6s that it will yield better economy than the higher standard gear ratios that we see in the current line of W20, W22 and W24.
The 6.x gear ratio will allow the motorhome to achieve cruising speeds much quicker and when the transmission shifts up to 6th gear the RPMs indicated will be less than is seen with the conventional ratios that we are currently using. This will benefit the owner by yielding great power off the line, better climbing power and much better fuel economy for the long run.
I hope to have more technical details about this shortly. Stay tuned!

Hi DriVer,
I just saw a new Coachman M/H today with a new 2500 Allison tranny. It is a 5 speed only but it has two LED readouts like the old 6 speeds had. Have you heard anything about W/H using this tranny? This was on a diesel with a 300 cummins.

The 6 speed tranny should make serious dent in the useable power of the Vortec engine. The biggest advantage diesels have is their torque, and the ability to access is in the smaller RPM range that they run in. Gas engines have less torque but the power output is respectable. The problem is that the horsepower occurs at a higher RPM band and when the revs come down, so does the power. By adding another gear and tightening up the spread between the ratios, the 8.1 Vortec will be better able to keep it's revs in the sweet spot. While this won't increase the engine's horsepower any it will give the driver better access to it and it'll appear to be more powerful, especially on steep grades.
Just when Ford is trying hard to "catch up", the bar gets raised again.

The 2100mh already has "double-overdrive". 4th and 5th are <1:1. The rearend ratio in the w24 is currently 5.68. The w22 ustilizes a 5.38. This is for the W chassis with 22.5 tires.
