They must be attempting to limit the amount of gas theft. I filled up at a Chevron and it only allows $75. After the second $75 I had to go into the store and they ran the credit card to allow me to add more fuel. Joe

Now this is a point that irritates the heck out of me.....

They have my CC...they can authorize the total amount, WHY oh WHY do I have to STOP and come in???

"most" gas pumps actually make a pre-authorization call to you CC issuer for a preset amount determined by the station operator, before you ever start pumping. This is just to verify that the card being used is valid. I've seen it set as low as $35.00 & as high as $99.00. The merchant "later" sends the actual charge amount thru after you stop pumping. If the pump stop before you are full, it just means you reached their arbitrary pre-auth limit. I don't think there is anything magic about $75.00.

I've noticed that there is a limit even at the Flying J pumps, UNLESS I first put in my "Flying J rewards card", and then provide the bank's CC. Their pumps "apparently" ask for a much higher pre-authorization limit (or maybe none at all), because I've never had their pump stop before I'm full, after using their card first.

It is a real pita for someone who has a problem walking. When the pump is a distance away and I have to go in to give them the CC and then go in again after the transaction I find it difficult to do.

That's one reason why I like filling at the hook!

We'll be going to the one on I-20 outside of Columbia, SC tomorrow!

Oh I feel old. I remember gas at $.28 per gallon and gas in Mexico for $.04 per liter.
Gave the gass station attendant $2.00 to put some gas in a VW thing. He gave me back change and it was filled up.
Now I think I could fill my lighter (if I smoked) for about the same.

As far back as I can remember was gasoline was .40 cents per gallon at the Sinclair gas station and I used to stick my hands in it cause it tingled. How did we ever survive the 50s!

TandW,

Thanks for the info on the location of the Sams in Roanoke. I remember a late night in Nov. 2008 driving around Roanoke for an hour looking for a Wal Mart that was listed in the Next Exit book. Finally found it off Franklin Road but the Sams Club is way closer to I81.
