I will be changing the antifreeze in our rig soon and am not a big fan of DexCool. Would there be any problems in using regular 50-50 mix antifreeze(the green stuff like Tech 2000) in place of the DC?

JC2, Believe Omey did some research on Tech 2000 coolant from Walmart, and reported that it was pretty good stuff according to specifications he researched.

I had mine changed out last year to the "green stuff". My mechanic said there have been a lot of law suits against GM due to the Dex Cool. Don't know if that is true or not but I respect his knowledge and experience. He said he has changed out many Chevy's and has never had a problem. He did say to not do it until your warranty expires.
I have had no problems so far and engine does not seem to run any warmer or cooler.

You can go to Wal Marts web site and read the MSDS spec on anything chemical they sell. Their Super Tech Antifreeze is just that ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. Dex Cool adds in Potassium 2-ethylhexanoate to the mix.

And don't buy 50-50 mix as you are paying a lot for water.

They can't void your warranty for changing to plain old antifreeze. But, if you change flush all the old Dex out before you refill.

I first became aware of the problems with Dex-cool a couple of weeks ago when a co-worker told me about all the problems he's had with his 2007 GM van and the Dex-Cool turning to a sludge and clogging the cooling system. On October 23,2008 the CA Superior Court did grant final approval to a class action lawsuit which covered dozens of GM vehicles. Just Google Dex-Cool and you can read for hours.

Like JC2 my MH is due for a antifreeze change and I'm trying to decide what to use.

Dang Oemy

I was opening to use the premix as I had heard that they use Tx water which supposedly will keep any type of plumbing clean.

I have been in the radiator business for many years Yes you can change but remember The Original and the green do not mix and turn to lime green jello! be sure to flush a couple of times to make sure all original is out before changing

When I changed by coolant, I also changed the T-Stat, cleaned out the recovery bottle and bought a new radiator cap. Call me crazy but I resumed using Dexcool.

Just changed my radiator cap @ three years...36,000 miles..."crazy" cheap maintenance (5-10 bucks) on weakest link in coolant system.

Did the full system flush and change of coolant and I also put Dexcool back in. The lawsuit is only for specific vehicles/engines that I have read. Either way, proper maintenance is key and I have yet to see one with Dexcool have sludge or "jello" effect.
