8.1 liter 2003 Southwind Workhorse idling rough

Hi,

Any ideas on this?

engine surges when at idle in gear and when it is warm. Idles fine in park and also when the engine is cold.

I replaced the spark plugs because the engine was running rough. This fixed the issue but still hunts/surges at idle. Had a diagnostic done at a repair facility and they said the plug wires were bad. Replaced them still hunts/surge at idle otherwise runs fine.

Thinking of cleaning the throttle body and idle air control valve. Anyone know where the idle air contol valve is?

I would change the air filter and clean the MAF sensor.

The Mass Air Flow determines the air to fuel mixture. It is located just after the air cleaner. Use MAF spray cleaner on it, about $10.

There was an update to the GM programming to address the throttle body coking up, so you may want to clean the TB and have the ECM updated. Also check for vacuum leak and also do as Arch posted above regarding the MAF sensor.

well I took it back to the repair shop being they charged me $135 for the diagnostic. They also wanted $275.00 for the plug wires and installation. Now they are saying 1 of the new plugs was firing to the side and possibly a bad oxygen sensor. Wont know about the sensor until they replace the plug?

Where is the throttle body at and what is the ecm? Obviously I am not a mechanic but I can do some.

Oh and while pulling into the repair shop today someone hit my rv probably a few K in damages. Ouch!

When was that update? Was the update included with early UP reprogram?

When my MAF was dirty the original symptom was a check engine light and everybody said the O2 sensor was bad. I changed the O2 sensor and guess what...still had the problem.

The reason you get the O2 sensor Check Engine Light (P0151) (P0131) is because the sensor is doing it's job as it knows the air/fuel mixture is bad.

So clean the MAF before you start buying sensors.

That update came out in 2005 I believe. It would have been included in every UP since then.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If it still does it after you clean your mass air See if your repair shop can do a smoke test before you start throwing parts at it. The throttle body is where the air intake hose goes into the engine and the mass air is on the other side of that hose.

Could you be more specific. I would like to see if my '04 has had this. What is an "UP"?

Thanks.
