I thought I was through with the broken studs on the exhaust manifold when I got the 8.1. After my first trip I heard the familiar sound of leaking exhaust. Since Holland MH is the local WH service I visited them. They checked it out and found 2 bolts broken. Since the bolts are stainless they can't get them out of the head in normal ways and will have to also replace the head. This is under the warranty but sure sounds expensive after the warranty ends. Their explanation is the body builders don't leave enough room for airflow around the manifolds. Does anyone else have the same problem?

You can't box the motor up too tight and you should check to make sure that the front rubber air dam on top of the radiator to the body is in place.

Given the fact that the manifolds are being replaced, a Cold Air Induction Kit should be fitted to cool down your manifolds. Your service center should know how to install this device and I highly recommend it. We've seen good results with the kit installed.

Many yrs. ago I was dealing on a 454 with an exhaust leak, and in conversation with
my mochanic. His thinking was that people were driving down the interstate at 70+mph
on a 90deg. day with the A/C blasting for several hrs. And when they pulled off at
the next exit they shut down a RED hot engine. As in manifolds aglowing!!!!!
His advice was to plan ahead and turn off the air before the exit and to let the
engine idle for a min. or two before shut down.

I did not buy that 454 but did buy one from a friend with the 454,and 80K miles
later I sold it without any sign of manifold trouble.

I have done the same with the 8.1 and 30K later I have no problems, as I know of!
And the last time I sent the puter back to the programmer, I ask for and received
a mod to the puter that turns the two 12volt fans on for 2 min. after engine shut
down. All in an effort to remove engine heat, and to keep it out of the MH. TENN.

If you put your RV info in your signature, it would help . I don't know of any National Rv WH chassis having Heat probnlems.

Are you certain the fasteners are stainless
steel? Stainless steel is pretty brittle for
an application like that. And, are they bolts or studs?
I like studs with nuts and washers
on exhaust manifolds. The torque used on the
fasteners is very low to allow the manifold to
"grow" with the heat. The holes for attachment
are way bigger than the fastener to allow for
that growth. I've driven the P12 on the freeway
at night and had my son flop open the doghouse
to see if the manifolds were glowing..nope..
but they DID glow orange on our old 1990 454.

I had a similar problem on my P-30 ('96 Pace Arrow) and I drive 60mph all the time. This time I was driving from Georgia to Michigan with no AC on at all since it was very cool and I still got the problem. There are only 18,000 miles on the engine. Today I checked if WH would cover the kit to blow cool air over the manifolds and they don't seem to care about that.

How Dare they, . Ya know the kit ain't that much $, and it's worth every penny, Oh and it ain't hard to install, even DriVer could do it.
