I need some help here. Got a new winny with the 8.1 Not my 1st. My 1st trip with it was to S.C. from Ohio thru the W.V. Turnpike and all the hills and mountains. No problem. 2nd long trip coming up, to Fla., same route more or less same hills. 2500 mi on rig so I changed the oil and filter before i left. Fram filter valvoline oil. 6+ quarts oil. dipstick read full. Pulling a hill near Parkersburg W.V. I got a low oil pressure warning light and warning. Pulled over checked oil -ok. Called WH, they said go to a dealer. the oil pressure would read about 28#, when I pulled a hill it would stay at that and then I would get the warning. It was usually after some longer time of high RPM. Went to a dealer in Mooresville N.C, the kid told me[ after he put his diagnostic tool on it that I was low on Oil , dipstick was in the operating range, he said it was low added a qrt. and it read overfull . [He checked it the 1rst time after it had sat for a good while] anyway I didn't have any more problems until I was in Fla. on a very flat road and passed a slow moving truck high- Rpm.somewhat extended period of time and I get the warning again. By the way I asked the tech if there was a code or memory in the engine computer that indicated I had low oil pressure and there wasnt. on the way home thru the mts. it Happened frequently. I made an appointment with a WH dealer I trust near home but because I now had 3200 mi on this oil and filter I changed them. I also had in mind that if there was a problem with the filter WH would probably charge me as it wasnt a Delco. any way after the oil and filter change my oil pressure is higher and the WH dealer could not find any problem I originally thougt it was a bad sending unit but now Im thinking bad filter.
I did cut open the filter but was unable to determine any problem. I also cut open a Delco filter for comparison and can tell I wont use the fram again. Any thoughts?

lakewoodpaul, I will only use a NAPA Gold, WIX, Hastings or a AC/Delco (in that order) filter. It has been reported in the past that there exists a pressure anomaly when Fram filter is used. I don't mind spending a couple bucks more for a better filter.
You will need to watch your oil consumption which could be as much as 1 quart per 100 gallons of fuel consumed. This is normal according to Workhorse. I have not used that much oil and a number of us will perhaps only use a 1/2 a quart per 100 gallons if that. We have owners here that will report little if any oil consumption in between oil changes so just keep an eye on it.

As I was reading your original post concerning the low pressure I immediately thought of the Fram filter. About 10 years ago I had an issue with a Fram filter on a Silverado pick up. At the time a GM Service Manager told me to stay away from Fram, they had had problems with the filters.
Since then, like DriVer, I have stayed with NAPA Gold, WIX filters and now have been using CarQuest filters manufactured by WIX in the US. I also converted to 5/30 full synthetic oil in the MH only, cars are still Dino. With the synthetic consumption is reduced in the MH
Please post again if you continue to have the low pressure alerts, it could be something internal in the engine.

Is anyone using a Purolator L40084 filter. I went to Advanced Auto yesterday with the Napa Gold number and they had to order one and went to pick it up I had the Purolator filter. I installed it and it works O.K. I don't know where it is made. It doesn't say where on the box. Lyledavid

Lyledavid, When I was working as a grease monkey in my very early years ... my boss sold a ton of Purolator filters however I have not tried one on the 8.1L engine. many numbers come to mind at the moment. On thier website they also list Hastings and Baldwin Filters.
I am not hearing any negative comments about Purolator filters.

I use wix filter and 5w30 synthetic and have not had to add oil between changes on my 8.1 . I was told that oil pressure of 8.1 is low pressure, high volume. Mine runs at 43-47psi at highway speeds. (63-65 mph) Is everybody else running at about the same pressure?

I just installed the L40084 before my trip to fla. It seemed to me that it was built as good as the napa filter at about half the price. My crusing oil pressure is 45psi. I went to advanced auto because my local napa store closed. A 2500 mile trip and used no oil at all. Im running mobil 1 10w 30 syn. No brake problems, but then again I barely used them by traveling off hours. Brake fluid flush last august.

Driver, oil consumption is good, actually excellent. Seems to be better than my past rigs. But the low oil pressure warning did scare the s--- out of me. Got to believe it was the Fram filter --engine did not make noise or overheat, it ran fine. Just changed oil on my towd and did use the Napa filter. think i will stay away fram for now on.
Can you or anyone else explain how a filter could cause this problem?

I just did my annual oil change on my 8.1, I use Mobile I 10W30 oil. I had ordered my filters from Oemy's in the past and always got the AC filter. I use the one quart filter. This time when I got the package they were champ filters. If I remember right when I was in the business Champ was a low price filter. I just hope I don't have any problems with it. The Transmission filter was Allison so that made me happy. Any one had any experience with the champ line?
I only drive about 3500 miles a year so once a year I feel is good.

Great post-I installed a fram filter last month. On my way back from FL to GA the oil pressure light came on for a few seconds-Scared the heck out of me...Had engine checked no problems found. I will change that filter tomorrow-Thanks again for a great post. I have found this site to be very informative. Driver you have a lot of RV knowledge-thanks again

I can assure you that the Champ filter is as good as the AC Delco... Speaking with the folks at Champ Labs who/whom do you think makes many of the GM/Ford Oil filters. I have a 2 quart Champ on my rig. I can go back to AC Delco but you get to pay extra for Blue paint and the name. Who do you think makes Super Tech Oil Filters that is sold at Wal Mart.
I have looked at Wix, Champ and a couple of other Allison filters and they are not a match. Therefore Allison brand is all I carry.
I have my oil tested at every change and never has the filter been an issue. I even tested Super Tech Oil and filter on my 162,000+ mile 97 Honda CRV and then tested Pennzoil and a AC Delco filter... Again no issue with filter or oil. Do to the age and mileage I change at 3,000. On my 8.1L I can usually run close to 5K with Mobil 1 10/30.
Beside Champ is MADE IN THE USA.
