I am in Mission TX. We were about 1.5 miles from our camp ground on 83 west. I lost power on a grade. I let off on pedel and looked for place to pull off. Seen one about 300 feet. gave it some gas and had power for about 2 seconds. Pulled off and was dead in the water.
Tried to restart not. Called towing service and they said they would send some one. Was not in a good place. Between 83 and an onramp. Tried to start and it started up. So called Police and they came to help me get into an empty lot. It started and we made the lot. Safe. The driver then called and said he could not make it so Police said park was 1/2 miles and maybe it would make it driving slow. So we tried it and got here safe thanks to police officer's help.
Called my road service and canceled. Now do any of you think that it could be fuel filter? I think I will change it but how can I check to see if that is what is wrong?
I have three months to get it running but want it fixed soon.I am driving a 2002 Bounder 31W.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Ron

Ron--
Did it set the Service Engine Soon light?
If it did, can you have the code read off the
rig's computer? Your idea of changing the fuel filter is a good one. And inexpensive. And you can do it yourself, given you have tools at hand. It does sound just like when my Vorec BB
had a fuel pump failure. Any Mr. Goodwrench at
any GM Dealer can read the fuel pump pressure
at the fuel rail. Mine ran at but 15 PSI!! They
DROVE it into the Shop. There are several items
in the Powertrain, that if they quit, then you walk. But to have it restart and run, sure sounds like a fuel pump..they often quit at
about 50K miles..if it IS a fuel pump make sure
you replace it with a Genuine Hi-dollar AC Delco
Pump...

I would bet on a fuel filter. It is a good idea to have the fuel pressure checked. That would at least tell you if it is a fuel problem or not.

Vapor Lock? The fuel filter could be plugged along with where the return line for the fuel is being dumped back into the tank... Warm fuel going into the bucket where your fuel pump is.... I had the same problem in July and thats what my problem was...

this is one of the fun one i have had to work on in the shop, yes fuel pressure could be a concern, but also have seen ignition switches cause crazy things and i would also suspect the crank shaft position sensor having an intermitant fault, if the reference signal is lost for less then a second the vehicle stalls, bottom line have it looked at and be patiant the poor guy working on it may be looking for the needle in the hay stack if it does not happen all the time.

It was'nt the 'reduced engine power' or limp mode was it? If not , I'd say a fuel problem too, either filter or pump. How much gas did you have in the tank when it messed up.
If a fuel pump is going bad it will show symptoms when the tank is low. The fuel cools the pump and they are worse when the get warmer.
WH replaced my fuel pump and it seemed like it was running good but the check engine light was on and that's the code it read.

Is there any other way to change out the fuel pump other than dropping the tank..seems that these coaches would have some sort of a top access panel, but I can't find one on mine anywhere...

We also have heard about home remedies where an owner made an access hole in the floor to get at the pump however I wouldn't want to recommend this procedure.

OK...can you then tell me why an external pump isn't used in the first place or why you can't replace the OEM with one of these....right now I'm having trouble accessing the generator hose and fuel input, but that's another story...
I guess an access door would be great under the bed maybe...but only with the tank lowered so as to get it right...thing is my water tank is under there and looks to be right over the fuel tank anyway....so even if....which would be the most work?....and then there's this thing of greasy hands and feet...
