Hello;

I'd like to replace the drain plug, or at least the crush ring or washer, on an upcoming oil change on my 8.1L... anyone know the correct size?

Thank you...

Richard, unless the OEM plug has stripped treads, you should not have to replace it. The 8.1 uses a M12 X 1.75 drain plug with a machined surface for sealing - No Gasket is required. If you want to use a gasket be sure it a "CRUSH" type gasket. Most of the "CRUSH" type gaskets are copper. You can use a 1/2 inch I.D. gasket on a 12mm Plug. Most parts stores carry them.

Good luck - Glenn

Thanks for the reply; I guess I don't need the new drain plug but bought one any way for a spare. I did buy some nylon washers; is it okay to use these? Seems like based on the material it would 'crush' a little bit...

I would think if some kind of crush washer was needed. Chevy would have used it as OEM. I never had an oil leak problem with my 8.1 in 7 years at the drain plug.

Richard, I don't know the answer to the nylon gasket question. If you decide to use a nylon gasket, I can't think of any reason it would not work, BUT, I would keep a close eye out for leaks or heat cracking or any oil residue that might appear on any under chassis components.

Good luck - Glenn.

I put one of the those fomoto on my Brave a couple of years ago and love it. It just takes a little longer drain the pan. But other than that it is easy and I got the model with the nipple so I can attach a hose that drains into gallon jugs.

That looks like a great idea; when draining the oil, the one with a nipple would be nice to attach some tubing and have the oil go right into the container and not have to transfer from a tub.

Does it require a tool to open the Quick valve? It doesn't look like it.

I would be concerned about kids, or a prankster, opening it. At least with the current plug it takes a wrench and some strength to remove the plug.

Any comments on this? Or am I worrying too much?

I use one, moved it from my first rv, never had a problem. I had them send me the ring lock, so the drain can't open accidently. You need a pair of pliers to squese the ends together to take it off and on. Easy to do. I also have one on my Honda.
I carry a 2.5 gal gas can and can change the oil anywhere. I let it cool after draining, then change the filter, using papper towels and a plastic bag. No mess.

Well, you're probably worring too much, except that the same thought crossed my mind when I saw the valve. Not likely to happen, but it did have me thinking what that 8.1L might sound like when running with no oil in the pan!

I do like the idea, though, especially the one with the nipple so I could attach tubing to it and drain directly into a container.

I did the oil change a couple of nights ago and all went well; turns out there was no crush washer, so I left well enough alone. I now have unused washers and a spare drain plug for that emergency down the road that probably will never happen... but hey, I'm prepared!
