Thanks DriVer. For what it's worth, I run Mobile 1 synthetic in both the engine and the generator with appropriate filters for the Mobile 1.

Driver, Those oil pressures don't seem correct....
Where did you get the specs on "5 PSI @ 1000 RPM" minumum and "10 PSI @ 2,000 RPM" MAX.....

10# per thousand rpm comes to mind.

Excellant base line to follow, "Chebby's" have always had a great oiling system (even stock).

Seems way too low even for the 8.1 I think I have a minimum of about 10 lbs at 600 RPM with the engine hot.
Are you sre that is not a mis print?

Bob, I saw on another thread that you are using Mobil 1 filters. Last week I picked up an M1-302, 1 qt size. Two questions, do they make a 2 quart filter that fits, and also, do they make the M1 filters for generators? I use Mobil One in my Onan generator also.

Like posted, I think that is the "Minimum" of what the pressure can be.
I have 40+ off idle and around 18 at idle when hot.

Oil Pressure (Minimum) 34 kPa @ 1,000 RPM 5 psi @ 1,000 RPM
if Oil Pressure (Maximum) 69 kPa @ 2,000 RPM 10 psi @ 2,000 RPM
Gotta be a misprint, or I have a serious over pressure condition in my engine

This information came right out of the shop manual.
I'm going with this story and I'm sticking to it. Regarding .....
Oil Pressure (Maximum) 69 kPa @ 2,000 RPM 10 psi @ 2,000 RPM
I have access to all the specifications on the 8.1L including the torque charts and diagnostic tables. The oil pressure range is not shown and what is indicated in the diagnostics is to get a pressure gauge and connect it to the oil gallery and observe the results. What may be displayed on a guage may not be the same as what is displayed on the IP's command center.
Yes I do show oil pressures > 10 psi on my engine. I have no reason to suspect that there is a misprint.
Here are the specifications for the 7.4L / 454.
Lubrication System Oil Capacity without Filter Change 5.7 liters, 6.0 qt
Oil Pressure (Fully Warmed Oil not Hot)
68.65 kPa @ 600 RPM
172.37 kPa @ 2000 RPM
10 psi @ 600 RPM
25 psi @2,000 RPM
Oil Filter System Full Flow
Oil Pump Type Gear Driven

The gear-type oil pump is driven through an
extension driveshaft. The extension driveshaft is
driven by the oil pump drive, which is gear driven by
the camshaft. The oil is drawn from the oil pan
through a pickup screen and tube, into the oil pump
(7). Pressurized oil flows through the oil filter, into the
oil cooler (5), back into the engine (6), up to the oil
pressure gauge port (2) and rear crankshaft bearing,
and is then distributed to the upper oil galleries. Oil
must flow around the oil pump drive (1) in order to
reach the right side valve lifters properly. The oil is
delivered through internal passages in order to
lubricate camshaft and crankshaft bearings and to
provide lash control in the hydraulic valve lifters. Oil is
metered from the valve lifters through the valve push
rods in order to lubricate the valve rocker arms and
ball pivots. Oil returning to the oil pan from the
cylinder heads and the front camshaft bearing,
lubricates the camshaft timing chain and the
crankshaft and the camshaft sprockets. There are
two bypass valves located in the engine block, above
the oil filter; the oil filter bypass valve (4) and the oil cooler bypass valve (3).

The information DriVer provided is good. There are two things that are pertinant to the ongoing discussions.
1. The oil pump is a gear type pump. (not the same as gear driven). That means the pump will not "fold over" under higher backpressure. ie, it will build pressure and continue to try to move oil. With the fact that the pump has the full power of the engine to drive it, neither will the pump stall, which could be the case of an electrically driven pump, where the motor is normally rated just above the running amps.
2. There is an internal relief bypass around the oil filter. The stated concerns about the Fram filters being "too tight" are invalid. Oil might not get filtered, but the engine will get lubricated.
The reported case of a Northwest regional manager for WorkHorse making the case for an engine failure due to the wrong filter was therefore BS.
Thanks again for digging this information up.

Please consider reviewing the attachment.
These documents are written by General Motors engineers.
Clearly a case is made in regard to the use of the wrong oil filter in the diagnostic procedures. Workhorse has been able to identify the offending oil filter(s) and have made the recommendations to owners as to which oil filters are not recommended.
