AC leak in evaporator

I must have a leak in my evaporator. Dash AC doesn’t cool anymore and I can hear what sounds like an air hiss in the Heater core/AC evaporator box. I stuffed one end of a small hose inside the box and held the other end to my ear and it sounded like someone was blowing into the hose. This is only when the compressor is engaged.

How can this happen?

I believe what you are hearing is whats left in the system circulating. I would not condem the evap so easily. More likely compressor seal or hose leak. My condenser leaked a few years ago and had it repaired, no problems. Take it to an a/c man.

To properly leak check, you need a refrigerant detector....EXPENSIVE. An A/C tech should have one.

Air molecules vibrate therefore sending sound pressure waves through the hose which you are able to interpret as hissing!

Probably hearing blower noise. For the A/C to engage (or attempt), the blower must be on. Get it checked out by a pro. We've seen some of the strangest A/C problems. Some were expensive ..... most others not so bad.
