I was doing my oil change/chassis lube today when I noticed the filter I bought is constructed differently from the one I replaced. Here is what they look like:

The new one is on the right. The part that threads on to the block does not look as beefy. I could not find anywhere on the filter or box where they were made.

I make a scratch on the bottom so I know when to stop turning. Guess I'll have to put my resperator on from now on.

Send a message via AIM to oemtech
This is a perfect example of either a supplier change or a spec change - maybe both!

I just purchased one at my local GM dealer and received the same as I removed. That would be the one on the left. I would be take yours back to the dealer, find out more information and possibly show him the difference...

So are they both PF454 filters? There are GM parts that are copies sold with there name on but are not OEM parts.

Yes, they are both AC Delcos. I have been buying all mine since we got the MH from our local AutoZone. This is the first time I got one like this.

We are leaving tomorrow for a month or so, will check on the road & if I find any like the old one they will be history.

I can't see how deep the threads are on the newer design but if you count them and they are the same I don't see a problem.

Metal is getting expensive. Manufacturers are going to be looking at products and how they can reduce the amount used. For 60 psi of oil pressure the large heavy boss on the earlier version really is over kill.

A parts house. Filters still coud be counterfit. Compare the box it came in with a know Ac Delco filter and box.

When buying a filter always check what is in the box. There are people out there who are inspecting them but not returning them to the correct box. These things ought to be sold in sealed packaging, just like meds are. Additionally, before you remove the old filter be sure to check the threads on the new filter. I once had a PF5 that had undercut threads and would not go on. The threads kinda-sorta resembled an acme style of thread with a flat crown. Good luck!!

I always check also to make sure they are what I relly want, & also that it hasn't been used. In this case the filter was marked correctly. I really didn't notice the difference until I filled it with oil I'm going to check a few stores here in Pahrump before we leave.

It seems to be working ok so far on our drive here.

I checked several stores yesterday and they all had the newer style. But I did notice in small letters printed on the bottom "Product of USA". When I got back to the coach I checked mineand it said the same.
