I know this subject has bee covered many times. I was driving in the rain a few days back and water got into my air filter. I assume it was through the air tuba inlet however, the filter box was not securely closed at the left bottom side. The engine did miss a couple of times and the engine light came on. I replaced the filter and made sure the box was securely fastened. I also added an extension to the tuba (click on photo, I have a Mac so getting photos to my post is not easy) My question is will this modification restrict the air inflow too much or not?. http://www.irv2.com/photopost/...ields&name=Bruce%20H

My thought was the extension would keep out the water entering the through the grill. The extension opening sets above the grill area.

I don't know driver, I haven't been in a lot of rain, doesn't rain a lot in AZ. I hope it doesn't restrict the air flow, which I have concerns about.

Bruce H,
I would strongly suspect the filter box closure and/or a poor seal where the bottom of the tuba enters the filter box. Both these places have much more direct water exposure. The connection to the air box is a known poorly sealed place.
Any moisture entering the top of the tuba is likely to get trapped at the bottom of the tuba where there should be a drain "flapple"
I have modified(shortened) my tuba to take advantage of more ram effect of incoming air thru the grill. While still retaining the "flapple" drain and have not yet experienced any issue from heavy rain travels after 2 years.

Here is a previous thread describing how a member(edgray) sealed his airbox to prevent water ingestion.

Thank all of you for you input. M&Em, I did not realize the tuba had a drain flapple at the bottom. So I do not see any reason for my modification, I will take it off today. A couple of years ago I read other posts and they suggested putting a seal around the top of the hood opening to keep water out that may be interfering with the windshield wiper motor and letting water in the tuba, I did this at the time. Also have seen posts installing after market and DIY air filter systems. As much as it rains here in AZ or maybe I should say as much as I drive in the rain I don't think it will be an option for me.

Bruce,
Water entires from 2 places:
1) The top of the hood.
2) The air box via the wheel well.
Your mod just may direct the water into the tuba unless you seal the hood with a rubber seal and/or sealing the air box as some of the other members have.
Lastly a CAI my be the answer if properly designed and installed correctly.
