Allision Transynd Fluid & filter change

Coming up on the 4 year time frame with only approx 22,000 miles I did the Allison control filter & fluid change.

1. 29539579 Allison control filter Approx $10.00 at W. Williams in Saginaw Mi
2. Castrol Transynd Cherry Red Fluid- 3 gals - $106.00 at same source.

3. Used the AC filter wrench for the common AC PF52 size family.
new filter hand tight then one full turn - needed wrench
4. Drained 9.5 qts out. Cleaned plug, seal OK, Torqued to 26 FT-lbs

5. pic of the metal wiped off the magnet both sides, I think is typical.

6. Fluid was still red in the pail with no particles found. When wiped with a white rag the old fluid is more gold color.

7. Used a plastic hose with on/off valve and cap that attaches to a qt oil container. Transfer gal to qt and inserted hose into the tube 4 inch -no spills. cost approx $4. .Cleaned and keep in MH to add fluids.

Started up and after approx 30 min Trans fluid checked in cold level on stick.

DRIVER -made me do it. THANKS

Question is, why did you change the fluid? According to the Allison Engineer that wrote the TES 295 spec, Transynd is a 300,000 mile fluid. It never wares out. The only reason to change it is contamination. He says if you are concerned just send a sample in for analysis.

Per my owners manual- it states change every 4 Years.
In the transportation industries normal service cycle is using it everyday - That the MH downfall with requard to mechanical items, electrical connection ect.

Another fluid item is the ATF fluid in the hyd jack/slide system.

I'm not sure who wrote what however according to Allison;

The Allison Transynd fluid replacement schedule is 150,000 miles OR 4,000 hours OR 48 months whichever comes first.

PS: The spec never wears out ... the fluid on the other hand ...

PS1: Look at my article, (Blog) I got close to 12 Quarts.

I change my Allison xmission fluid every 25,000 or so. Still using Dexron iii.

Ive noticed if the coach sit for several days and let the fluid drain for at least 24 hours I'll get close to 11 1/2 quarts.

If I drain after the coach has only been sitting for an hour I'll get 9 quarts.

I drain, refill and drive at least 20 miles or more and then drain and refill again. I get my Dexron iii at Costco by the case, about $30.

Arch H, According to the Chassis Guide, the GM & WCC recommendation for D3 is 50K miles.

Just sayin. it's not logical to dump product that is only 50% through its life cycle. D3 would most likely go more than 50K miles but I would change it at or before.

Pretty sure my manual says 25,000 or 24 months. However I will still change at 25,000 as it doesn't cost me all that much and is easy to do.

The last thing I want to have trouble with is the transmission.

Arch, Yes you are correct, 25K miles. I know D6 goes out to 50K miles in an 4L-85E but it is NOT compatible for use in an Allison transmission.

For many reasons Transynd (synthetic) is so much better regardless of price ... and I agree; "The last thing I want to have trouble with is the transmission."

Read this http://www.irv2.com/forums/f125/former-allison-transmission-fluids-engineer-89293-15.html#post1166200 about Dextron III. This is the Allison Transmission Fluids Engineer I was talking about. There are 15 pages of posts in this topic. Some interesting reading, if you got the time.

@Full-Timers....Yes I have followed his posts have actually talked to him on the phone. Pretty nice person.

I eventually will switch to TE295 when I find it locally. I like the idea that it runs cooler.

About the allison transm.oil change

Hi! gg, one question, did you replaced the pan gasket, if so where did you find that gasket and if you had the gasket part number I will appreciated if you send it to me, and another question, the manual said that are I will need about 5 gal. of Allison transynd, it is OK with only 3 as you has, my Rig is Pace Arrow 2002, 8.1 with the Allison 1000, and only 25k miles.I will appreciated your info.
Thanks.

dinkie0720, I am not sure why you thinking that you are going to need a pan gasket. Reportedly, the gasket is re-usable. There is no need to remove the pan on an Allison transmission unless you are or have rebuilt the transmission.

Perhaps this article will help you:
Transynd Fluid and Allison Spin-On Filter Change

You will need approximately 6 gallons of Transynd and you must change it and the control (spin on) filter "twice" in order to be fully converted. Anything less is a waste of money so just use Dexron III.

If you are in for the penny you have to be in for the pound .. there is no other logical choice.

I believe that you may be misinterpreting the manual since there is no possible way to add 5 gallons of fluid to a transmission in a Pace Arrow. Your transmission type is an LCT1000 and the capacity of the transmission is 10.6 quarts and you may need a one+ more to fill the cooler and transmission lines. On my rig I added something close to 11.8 quarts per refill.
