I called a transmission shop to get the fluid changed in my 2003 5 speed transmission and they told me it had a filter on the inside that had to be changed also. I have only changed the outside filter 3 times and cannot find info in my owners manual about this. I only have 20,000 miles on it. Has anyone ever had an internal filter changed or is it necessary???
Bob

The internal filter is changed during a transmission overhall.

On my 2005, Allison 1000, I did change both filters when I first got it. I believe you don't have to change the internal filter until overhaul, but I did it so I knew it was done and I also wanted to inspect the pan for pieces etc. All was good, replaced internal filter, put the pan back up, changed the external filter, and filled er back up with new Transynd.

Thank you
I did not think the internal filter had to be changed under a normal fluid change.

retiredrlk1, Agree that the "External" spin-on filter is the only filter that requires replacing. "Perhaps" that dealer is trying to jack-up the labor rate because I know he isn't going to change the interrnal filter.

do it yourself, Allisons are easy to service on a fluid/filter change--save yourself some bucks if you're so inclined

I beleive Allison recomend changing the internal filter at 100K miles so don't do it. Allison is a tough transmission. I would recomend changing to sythetic oil you don't have to remove the pan but you have to do it twice to get the old oil out.

SR, The only time that Allison recommends changing the "Internal" filter on transmissions used in Workhorse powered motorhomes is when the transmission is overhauled. There is no other recommendation other than to change the external spin-on filter and fluid at the proper interval.

also just a reminder, when you change the red spin on filter be sure to take the round magnet out of the top of the old filter clean it and place it on your new filter
