He's saying that while he's at it, he'd like to freshen up the tranny with some new fluid without doing anything major, so how much can he replace this way.
I for one, have no idea, but when I tried it once in a jeep, I didn't get out anywhere near it's full capacity...according to the manual.

The torque converter cannot be drained. When you drain the trans. you only get about 2 1/2 gals. which is about half of the total fluid.

When I drained the fluid, I measured 3 gals. Joe is correct that 1/2 of the fluid remains in the torque converter. Suggestion, fill your Allison 1000 with Transynd synthetic fluid. Two changes (total of 6 gals.) of Transynd and filters will make the tranny run cooler and quieter.

trophylite,

Yes, the MH originally came with Dextron III. I contacted both Allison and Workhorse to confirm what was in the tranny via the vin number. It was important to change to Transynd synthetic fluid as mentioned above. I will also not have to change it for 4 years or 100,000 miles, which ever comes first.

If you have Dex III you can also use Mobil 1 Synthetic. But, according to Allison your back to a 2 year change cycle. So, is it cheaper do to the price difference. Not really. I did it because of availability at the time I changed. My next change will be Transynd.
