Should the oil pan be removed and the sump filter changed at 50k miles on a 2002 1000 or just change the oil and external filter?

No.... According to an Allison Document you only change the internal filter during an overhaul.
Go to my web site and download the Allison Fluid/Filter Changes Specifications.

Thanks for your prompt reply. The local auto patrs store wants a $60 dollar bill for the filter and gasket. I have been contimplating replacing the spin on with a WIX filter. I assume that at 5 years it won't be a warrenty problem. Marv

You can also get the spin on control filter from a Chevrolet dealership parts counter but they will up-charge you as much as $10.00 more for it.
Although I can't find the post at the moment I believe we had an owner here with an issue regarding the WIX filter however I don't know how much of that is in the installation or the filter itself.
Have a good day!

Use an Allison filter if available. But, I have used Wix and not had a problem.
Here is a quote from the Wix Warranty posted on my website in the downloads section.
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">If your WIX filter is found to be defective in material or workmanship during the period of service life recommended by the engine or equipment
manufacturer,WIX Filtration Products will replace the defective filter with another WIX filter. In addition,WIX Filtration Products will reimburse you for the reasonable costs of the parts and labor required to repair your engine or equipment to the extent the damage was solely attributable to a defect in your WIX filter. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I paid <$10 for this filter at a Allison/Detroit shop in Ocala, FL. Call a local large diesel truck garage.

I concur with Dale's post regarding the WIX spin-on filter warranty for the Allison. I use their filters and oil products exclusively on my motorhome.
Go 55!

Allison FAQ page is where to find accurate, current information. Every previous reply is correct. The stealer just charges you a premium for buying filters then re-selling them to you.

The cheapest I have found the spin on filter in the Prescott, AZ area is $28.00. Has anybody found them cheaper around here?

Don't forget to move the magnet from the old filter to the new filter it sticks to the filter so don't throw it out with the filter. I did once, but got it out of the trash.

Good news is that you can purchase the magnet at an Allison dealer if you loose it.
