I recently purchased an 03 Damon Intruder, w22, Allison. Bought the coach with 8900 miles - now have 10055. The previous owner said he changed the oil at 3k but I did not ask about tranny. I had the oil and lube serviced when I bought the coach but I am now reading about the filter changes, etc for the Allison. To be safe, I plan to have the spin on filter changed (required at 5k). Due to age, I would assume that I should have the fluid changed as well. Should I go to the synthetic? I assume there is no warranty benefit at this point. Looking for advice from you folks. Thanks, Harry

This topic has been discussed too many times to count, but I changed my 2001 A1000 fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic with 21000 miles because I was the third owner with no real service history available.

Hello Harry, If it were me, I'd change that transmission oil filter being careful to retain the magnet that will be attached to the old filter. Add a little of the recommended oil to replace that lost in the old filter and in a year or so reconsider the synthetic if you're pulling large hills or a heavy toad.
There will be smarter people than me along shortly. Thanks for asking the question.

Just FYI...Mobil 1 is NOT an approved transmission fluid by Alison. If you choose to use Mobil 1, Alison will not warrantee the transmission.
Alison approved transmission oil is TES-295 ONLY! The Alison synthetic transmission oil is Transynd.

I don't need Allison's approval for my transmission oil.

Your dime. I wouldn't recommend using a non Alison approved product to others though...

Mobil1 ATF meets or exceeds that of Transynd. Just because they haven't "paid a fee" to be endorsed; www.Mobiloil.com.

Well, I would say if the Transmission in still under warranty I would use the approved fluid. After the warranty runs out, put in whatever makes you comfortable! It was said "IT'S YOUR DIME" Transmission repairs are very expensive and if the wrong fluid was used "they" will use it for an excuse to deny the repair

Allison very strongly recommends Transynd and all new Allison's use this. Many of us have changed to Transynd just for the added protection it offers.
Note: To change from Dexron to Transynd requires either a system flush or two fluid changes. See your Allison manual.

I have made the change to all Transynd fluid on my '05. Allison told me to drain only (not power flush transmission). It takes 3 gals. of Transynd fluid per two (2) changes, which is recomended by Allison. The advantage of having all Transynd fluid is that it extends the life of the fluid from 25,000 mi. to 100,000 mi.plus the transmission runs much cooler with synthetic. Change filter at each change.

Thanks for the responses. I went to my local Allison dealer and had the filter changed and replaced the fluid with Transynd - total cost $250 + tax. Dealer said to change again in 24 months and then 48 months. Seemed like the right thing to do. Went to put the rig back in the storage lot, checked air, as we are leaving Friday and found right outside 40 lbs and leaking through the valve. Quick trip to tire dealer, tighened valve, and checked all tires. everything A ok. All in all, a productive afternoon. Thanks again for the advise. Harry

I don't know about the 2 or 3 times, I had mine changed at the Allison dealer in OR near the Monoco Factory... They flushed and refilled with Transyn. It was a one time deal with documentation that the service was done and it was good to go!

Consider using AMSOIL. They make a SYN product the Meets and exceeds the TES-295 Specs from Allison and cost less.
