Hello,

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I still have a few questions to pose the group. I've had my 2006 W24 Motorhome for 2 years now(purchase Nov/05 build date May/05). Today, I got in touch with Workhorse and they confirmed that my Allison 2100 transmission has the Transynd fluid from the factory. From what I understand, all I need to do is change the spin on filter and I'll be good for another 2 years? Is this correct? It seems the Allison owners manual that I received with my motorhome was not very well written. It show three maintenance schedules, but all three are identical.

When I go to the Allison site this is what is suggested:

For the model you requested:

Transmission 2100 MH
Using 100% TranSynd™ or TES 295-approved fluid Yes, The following recommendations are only valid if transmission contains 100% TranSynd™/TES 295-approved fluid.
Severe Vocation? No

Allison Transmission requires the following change intervals:
Transmission Fluid 150,000 miles
(240 000 km)
48 months
4000 hours,
whichever comes first.

Control Main (Spin-on) Filter 50,000 miles
(80 000 km)
24 months
2000 hours,
whichever comes first.

Internal Filter Overhaul

Lube/Auxiliary Filter (if present) 50,000 miles
(80 000 km)
24 months
2000 hours,
whichever comes first.

Yep, sounds about right. But, for the cost of the spin on filter ($10) you could change it every year. Just don't forget to remove the magnet from the old filter, clean it and put on the new filter.

When a transmission is equipped with Transynd, the filter change interval is; 4 years or 100,000 miles whichever comes first.

That ya go!

Driver,

Here is the link I am referring to. I'm hoping it is the right one and it states every two years for spin on filter...

THanks

This came out of the 2006 WCC Gas Motorhome Chassis Guide. I hope I'm not reading this incorrectly.

Beginning April 6, 2005 the fluid in all AllisonTM transmissions changed to TranSyndTM ATF. Regardless on fluid type, AllisonTM recommends replacing the spin on filter only (fluid change is not required) after the first 5,000 miles of operation, AllisonTM/Workhorse part no. 29539579. The AllisonTM recommended service interval with Dexron® III is to change the fluid and spin-on filter is every 25,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. AllisonTM transmissions with the synthetic fluid ATF TranSyndTM have a service interval of 4 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Now if Allison has a bulletin that says to change the filter at every 50,000 miles, I certainly don't have a problem with that.

I have a W-20 Sightseer. I'm having problems finding Transynd in New Mexico.

Where are you guys finding Transynd to purchase?

How many quart does a 1000MH - 5 speed Allison take for fluid change?

Thanks

Changing your fluid to a high concentration of synthetic fluid will require 2 such changes including the external spin on filter. There's a magnetic ring on the top of the filter - please re-use the magnet when you change the filter. Do not discard.

Driver,

I recently had my transmission fluid changed to Transynd by a Allison service center but they didn't mention anything about doing it again.

How soon, or how soon should I have changed the transmission fluid for the second time?

Ron

What I don't know and obviously you don't know is the method they used to change your fluid. If it will make you feel better you may want to call them and ask what your approximate concentration of Transynd is regarding the service they performed on your coach.

If you were doing the fluid change on your own, a 2 change cycle would be needed to bring the concentration level up because you can't drain the torque converter.

Driver,

If they changed all the fluid including the torque converter, how many gallons of fluid would it take?

They gave me the remainder of 3 gallons.

The total fluid capacity is: 14.8 Quarts.

Here's more information about your Allison Automatic Transmission: 1000 - 2000 Series Transmission Operator's Manual

I called the Allison service center about my recent fluid change and they said that in order to get 100
% Transynd I would have to have another fluid change, which agrees with what you explained.

I guess the part I was confused about is if I needed to do another change. They said that I only needed to do another change if I wanted to be able to go 150k miles until the next change. As it stands now I'm good to go for the next 50k miles at which time I can change the fluid and be good to go for another 150k miles

I think I'm good to go

Ron

The sooner you achieve 100% the better off you will be soooooo why wait? You're not pursuing an oil change interval - you're implementing a strategy which calls for 2 changes.
