I have an Allison Transmission magazine ad in front of me that praises the quietness of their product. "The quiet of an Allison automatic speaks volumes"
My Allison 1000 is not quiet. It has 22,500 miles on it. The filter has been changed twice. There have never been any metal particles visible. The Dexron oil has proper color and smell. With the exception of the double shift down when in cruise control, which seems to be a common complaint, performance is great.
The transmission growls in first, second, and third gear. Fourth and fifth are OK. When I commented to the RV dealer about it, the reply was that it was a common situation. One other owner I chatted with said his was the same. Since then I have not worried about it. That is, until Allison implies in their ad that there is something wrong with my transmission because it is not "quiet".
Any comments?????

Bob,
What I first thought was a transmission growl turned out to be a bad AC compressor clutch. My noise also happened in lower gears when accellerating and went away at hiway speed. Check out the thread titled "Whining while Accelerating".

If you are experiencing the rapid downshift, then you need to have a Workhorse Service Center see if you are on the list for the re-flash of the ECM. Have you registered at Workhorse.com and then checked to see what campaigns are open on your rig?
By your signature, I think you qualify for the re-flash -- '03 chassis --maybe an '02 -- depends on Vin# 10th digit signifies year--2 is 02, 3 is 03---

Well, it's nice to know mine's not the only one that makes some noise.
I recently noticed a bit of a growl from, I'm guessing, the tranny in my rig when it's shifting between 1-2 and/or 2-3. It's probably nothing to worry about.
Working at a large Chevy/GMC dealer we see A LOT of trucks come through here with Allison 1000's in them and I have yet to see one that's failed. Only small issues. They really are tough and have had numerous improvements made to them over the years to reduce noises, etc. I have to admit I am still VERY impressed with how smoothly my rig shifts.
I wonder if the ad you guys saw refer to the Allison 3000 series which are mostly used in rear engine diesels. Even if one of those units made noise you'd probably never hear it anyway 'cause it's so far back!
So, just like you said, Ed, along comes the UFO!

I have a lot of noise in the front also, but it is coming from the co-pilot. I am sure a UFO will not correct it either.

Its normal.
